What's the point of reading? Idle stories that amuse? or knowledge that lets you make more money so that u can buy more books to read?Originally posted by january:apparently u must be a young person who are not enlightened yet.
make money then i can spend on a nice book and read it.
going to work i can meet my colleagues and chat with them
waking up, i have another day to spend on leisireu activities
the point of life is to partake in various activities and enjoy the process of life.
i have not thinked about these industries yet but for sports, i really have to feeling to talk about its unproductiveness because many people in the world is training to be professional sportmens.well if u start thking u will realise that many things in this world are a waste of resources, including you and me.
at least in acting, when we watch television, a good drama can really bring emotions which so its a good form of leisure.the truth is... u are condemning competitive sports jus because u don't like it.
...but the nature of competitive sports and seeing who wins is really pointless and brings little pleasure.
agree...watching tv also waste of resources mah...especially detrimental when a kid learning violence and sex from tv...everything got good and bad...Originally posted by claus:the truth is... u are condemning competitive sports jus because u don't like it.
the objective is not to train people to win. that is a goal, but it is not the main thing. sports give people confidence, discipline, determination.Originally posted by january:what is needs is to solve real problems in the world such as poverty, violence and diseases.
what we need is people with wisdom to build a better world. hence i am saying that sporting industry which train people to win and win has to be cut down greatly.
In that particular sport only.Originally posted by da-cheese-freakk:sports give people confidence, discipline, determination.
why spend money on grooming and getting you the best actors and actresses to act in dramas u deem good?? does the world need people who can sing and dance and act now?? they help to solve "real problems in the world such as poverty, violence and diseases"?? stop wasting resources aka forum bandwidth.Originally posted by january:its ok to play soccer, basketball within community level with friends or all this.
but to spend money to train professional and build the sporting industry so that countires will wind medals is not okay because what the world needs now is not people with fastest leg, strongest hand.

Why chat? Its not productive and nothing comes out of it most times.
Why do you need leisure? It doesnt make u more money to buy books.
Apparently you do not see that there are many people out there who find meaning in following or participating in competitive sports, equal to or more than the printed word, idle chatter or other hedonistic pursuits.
As for my age, it doesn't matter. Being close minded immaturity enough.
i agree that the entertainment industry is also guilty of using up large amount of earth resources.Originally posted by -_sky_-:why spend money on grooming and getting you the best actors and actresses to act in dramas u deem good?? does the world need people who can sing and dance and act now?? they help to solve "real problems in the world such as poverty, violence and diseases"?? stop wasting resources aka forum bandwidth.
please .. have you heard of the famous phrase in the worldOriginally posted by da-cheese-freakk:the objective is not to train people to win. that is a goal, but it is not the main thing. sports give people confidence, discipline, determination.
in what other ways are people given the opportunity? everyone learns things in a different way. there are those who are read-write, those who are aural, those who are kinesthetic, those who are visual, etc. also, people are given different talents. I participate in MUN, and you have no idea how much confidence and determination I gain from going up and talking. what about those who do not have the same talents as me? people are different -- they have their own strengths and weaknesses. those who are artistic gain confidence, discipline and determination through their art. those who sing will sing, those who act will act. what about those who are naturally gifted in sports? should they not be given the opportunity to prove themselves? it is through putting your soul into something and doing the best that you could possibly do that you gain confidence. if people who are naturally athletic are not given the opportunity to practice, what good will it do? will it help the person in any way? why should some people gain spotlight while others are denied the chance, simply because society values certain skills over others? people cant always stay within the confinds of how society thinks things should be.Originally posted by january:please .. have you heard of the famous phrase in the world
"winning is the only thing"
crap..... i find it absurd that people train not to win, but just to be confident, discipline
YOU dun need sport to practice determination, discipline... anything else can also be use as a goal to practive determination
the world u want to live in is very boringOriginally posted by january:i agree that the entertainment industry is also guilty of using up large amount of earth resources.
hence we should reduce greatly the entertainment industry too, but not to the extent of eliminating it. remember. i also do not encourage the elimination of sports industry, just a great reduction.
i just simply want the world to greatly reduce the materialsim effect and non productive industry to well being of whole world so that we can channel more resources in important aspect like
education
increasing the wisdom of people so that there are many capable leaders and people in the world
reducing global income gap
when you have capable people and good people in the world, then the world can truly be a better place.
everybody has their own way of thinking. TS can argue dat sports and commercialisation of professional sports is a waste of resources but another forumer can say dat military is a waste of resources too...Originally posted by limpshaggy:I didnt read your whole tread but will share my view about your title.
Competitve sports are waste of resource
Here why i disagree
Alot of resources is put into sports but the payout justify the investment.
1)It is a form of entertaintment.
Human and society need entertaintment to have balance. Can you imagine a world without music, movies, sports and entertaintment? People play sports to relax and watch it to entertaint themselves. It would make people unhappy, which is the big picture of our human race, to live a happy life. All work and no play make a dull person and probably an unhappy and unbalanced one.
2) It promote health and team spirit. Self explantory.
3) It inspire people to achiveve and win Like art, sport is a form of inspiration for those who get into it. It;s promote freedom and alot of values. Why? Because you can play a sport with your own creative ideas and values like perservance and courage are omi present in sports.
4) It is a form of business. Brands like NBA, EPL, NFL, MLB, are generating massive revenues and sports also create jobs for alot of people.
PersonallY I suggest millitary as a concept is outdated and is the largest waste of resource. But that's another topic for another time.
