Spare the rod, spoil the child

actually this topic is kope from STOMP de.. but decide to discuss here anyway.
anyone still believe that sparing the rod will spoil the child?
personally i don't believe in caning my children. kids can be really mischievous at times but still, they are kids. if they misbehave, talk to them about their mistakes. be stern and stringent in your tone but do not ever resort to caning or violence.
sometimes i see parents cane their kids i also xing tong for them.. -

Young kids quite difficult to reason with. They are too immature to reason rationally. A controlled degree of spanking on fleshy regions such as the thighs or butt should be ok. Nonid cane la. If dun have ah.. i tell u.. asian kids will be juz as spoilt as western kids. Then we'll nid a local version of Nanny real soon.
Gradual n increased use of reason as the kid matures. Afterall, i dun it's appropriate to spank a teenager. He or she will only become more rebellious. -

Please bear in mind that ur child will not remain as a 5yr old forever, wait till he/she is in the teens.

i will whack them if i have to, like my parents did to me and give them tiger stripes to show their friends in school.
and looking back, i'm glad my parents did that.

However, some kids simply cannot be reasoned and/ or cannot be bothered with verbal rebukes. For these types of kids you gotta speak their language... The Rod! (Kids that run around inside the MRT inconveniencing and endangering fellow passangers are probably the ones that understand only the rod, but whose parents firmly subscribe to the "No Cane" rule)
It is dangerous to argue for or against the use of the rod, without considering the character of the kid(s) concerned. I think its more important that even if you do cane your kids, you do it not out of anger, but out of a desire to make the kid into a better person. -
e rod is like a representation of power over his/her child for a parent...much like a police constable having his pistol...
It should work just as well when e kid knows e rod is there then actually using it...
An effective parent should be able to control & still hold authority over e kid by simply conveying a staunt message "don't make me use it"...
Hence, a child is spoilt when parental authority is lost...not when e rod is being used or not...

i dont like discussing about parenthood methods.
because every child is unique, and every parent has the right to parent, and do a good job, w/o interference. -
U need to discipline from young.
Lay down the rules early. Check bad behaviour. Tell them u will not stand for rudeness etc
If the kid is young, it is ok to spank if they do something wrong.
Another way is to make them stand in a corner.
Let them know why they are being punished.
For teens- no point using the cane.
U can discipline by deducting their pocket money, limiting computer time & confiscating their handphones.
Don't forget to also compliment & reward good behaviour. -

Yesterday I was at parkway parade hor then this little kid with itchy hands put her arm behind the auto doors. As expected the doors opened and kiap her arm, then she started crying out not in pain but most prob coz her arm got stuck. Her mom thought she was just trying to get attention by crying out loud. But I saw what was happening since I was exiting, and stopped to push the door back and another passer by came by to free the kid's arm.
The mom had no idea what had happened, but I reckon the kid wouldn't have got her arm kiap if her mom kept her closer in tow. Reminds me of the time when I was a kid and I got my fingers kiap between the lift door, and I had to wait for the doors to close so I could release it. Nowadays no such things happen coz its a requirement to have minimum gap and 2 doors instead of one. -
some parents need more disciplining than the kids.
or in some cases...both are also in desperate need of discipline...
but on this topic, i agree with missqi.
its all up to the parent.
if he/she/they do a bad job, the kids can blame them if they want when they grow up or whatever...
