Average household income is not a very useful statistic.
First, the average is skewed by the high income of the top 20% earners. A median income, which means 50% of household earn more/less than, would be a better indicator.
Second, household income is temporarily distorted by young working adults that live with their parents. Thus, for a few years until these young adults get married and move out, some middle-class household can report income of above $15K.
Although household income has grown, the growth for most of us is nowhere near the 6-8% achieved by GDP growth. More of the gains from our economic growth have gone to the owners of capital and global talents. There is, however, not much that the government can do, because we are an open economy and are subject to global competitive forces.
We should stopping assuming that every Singaporean should be or is enjoying a high standard of living because Singapore is a developed city. Even in Japan, where I'm working now, there are homeless people in the parks.
I just hope that the tax burden on the rich be increased in tomorrow's budget. But by all indications, we'll probably be hit with GST and the rich gets a corporate tax reduction. -

I shows that 65% of the household earn less than 6k, and the average is so high is due to 15% of the household that earn more than 10k!!!!

I would think one of the ways to narrow it will be taxes, i do not mean GST. GST is penalisng the lower income, for they have to pay taxes (GST) even for necessities. The higher income, what will they think? I dunno why you people like to complain so much... Is it because only the "poor" people are complaining and the "rich" can't be bothered to say anything at all? So what do you guys want actually? Everyone in singapore earning exactly $5000 each? Then everyone will feel rich? There are bound to be rich and poor people in a country... it cant be helped...
The government may be trying real hard to lower the income gap between the rich and the poor but what do you want them to do? Pay the hardworking and highly educated $4000 and pay a low-educated bad working attitude person $4000 as well? There has got to be a limit and the only thing you "poor" people can do is to self-improve.... and not whine over here....
Another thing i noted from the replies is that once the sons and daughters get married, they will take away a portion of the family income... this is okay wat... the parents will have savings of their own and their sons and daughters should be providing for them as well.... As for the sons and daughters themselves, it doesnt matter if their family income is low because their new family only consists of 2 members wat... furthermore, if the 2 of them are working, then they should have a strong family income for just the 2 of them....

The government just wants to paint a poisitve and rosy picture. They'd rather make it more positive and less troublesome for them to work out the problems than to reflect the truth and scurry to answer for the shortcomings of this government.

i would like to stress again on the topic,
i not trying to complain anything,its just to raise a social awareness on the current policy that the government is adopting.
They are trying to calm everyone down by saying the income of Singaporean has raised, on the other hand, they want people to work till 70 years old coz cpf might not be enough.
Somemore the government is thinking of giving more citizenship( 6.5 million in 20 years time ) to foreigners and that will definitely affect the income of the Singaporean.
We can just sit back and do nothing as we usually do so, but all the facts are showing that Singaporean will at least need a degree so to lead a more comfortable life.
Now imagine all Singaporean are graduate,all are managers,directors,ceo,engineers,doctors..etc,then who is going to be the worker bees... -
I dont think the government knows how to solve this problem of income disparity.
Government only consists of people......humans......and we all have our limitations.....we are not perfect...we dont know everything.
Globalisation and free market are two potent forces..........in USA many people lose jobs.......manufacturing jobs go to China.....in China the regional disparity is getting wider.....east is rich....west is poor.....everybody have their own kind of problem......
Since olden times when capitalism is adopted.....there are always different classes....except if socialism is adopted....then there will only be 1 generic class.....and now the classes are even more pronounced with the advent of a new wave......globalisation.....
I dont think anybody really knows how to 'enhance' the model.........this is just how we live in this point of time in this age.....except maybe 200 years from now....maybe we will have a much better economic system.....but for now...... there are very poor people and very rich people......
For this......I support the government initiative of giving limited welfare......at least that's the least that can be done.......

If you are the founder and chairman of a MNC, and you employ a CEO and another COO and a world class management, paying them world class salary, when your company faces a problem, can your CEO and your COO and the management tell you they are afterall human thus dun expect them to solve all problems?
