I'm taking my o level this year and I want to study university in the future as I wish to be a teacher next time.
But I don't wish to go through JC life even though I heard from many that JC is a more direct routh to University.
So I wish to go poly then university but I'm not sure of the percentage of poly students to get into local university. I asked my teacher and she said it used to be difficult to get in but it's quite easy now.
Is it 5% or has it increased to 10%? My another teacher told me that top 25% would be qualified but they are private universities.
I don't think my parents would allow me to study oversea plus I do not have the finanicial.
1) Is it true that the local universities will look more on Singapore poly graduates? Or is it just top 5% from every poly?
2) But SP is the best poly in singapore and wouldn't it be very competitive if many want to enter university?
3) I heard that engineering courses would be much more easier to get into a university but I am not interested in engineering courses.
So is buiness or fashion design easy or diffcult to get in?
4) Basically I'm not very interested in business but heard that it's a very useful course so I thought of taking it. My interest would be fashion design but I have no thought of being a fashion designer in the future.
Is business courses interesting?

Poly is better. JC must wear school uniform, very childish. Next time I will apply go poly too. I dont think I wanna go JC, its just an extension of sec sch.

Fashion is a tight industry .
Depends on what you really want to be. -
JC's will always be the more direct route to Local Uni's.. simply bacause that is the sole purpose of the JC system, as a foundation for uni. (That's y A level certs by themeselves are worth about as much as toilet paper)
A Poly Diploma is worth more becos u r trained at a certain level already and the majority are not expected to move on to uni (in fact, apart form some business n engineering dips, the rest dun really set u up well for a uni course)
U gotta decide what exactly u want to do, to be a teacher locally u will need a degree to survive, otherwise will get stuck at low levels.
To do business u may or may not need a degree, depends on whether u intend to work for others or start something urself.
For fashion design, u dun really need uni degree. But u better get a reality check on the industry in S'pore first.
Anyway.. isnt JAE over?

Should be top 10% of all polys. The rest go overseas. Don't forget our local Uni takes in many foreign students

Yes, cos u are competing with jc, poly & foreign students.

Yes, it is easier for engineering students to get into NTU.
Business u can try get diploma first, then pursue a degree later.
Fashion design- can try Laselle

On top of good rssult, going to University via the Poly route also uses your O Level result.
The computation is 80% Poly result and 20% O level result.
2. Yes, SP is one of the most established Polytechnics in Singapore. Another will be NP. If you have the grade and motivations, you wouldn't need to afraid of competition. A piece of advice from me is, do you 1000% in poly, every test/exam COUNTS.
3. It depend on what you want to do in future field. Some field of engineering are in popular so it's difficult to get in. While someone field are less popular and competitive, people can get into the course easily.
If you want to go into Uni by a Business diploma, It will be easy because you'll have the basics of accountings. I am not sure about fashion course.
Almost all poly diploma can get you into a business course in Uni. But with business diploma, it can be an advantage.
4. Yes, business can be very useful in term of jobs opportunities. Business course is dealing with tonnes and tonnes of numbers. Better start getting good grades for your O Level POA first. Flip open your Sat classified section and you'll see tonnes of job opportunities for accounting diplomas holder.
To get into business or fashion designer is your choice. Sit down and think seriously what you want to do in 5 to 10 years time.
Do visit the polytechnics and universities website to see the job prospects.

but i think poly helps u to settle into uni doesn't it? cos uni also alot of projects?? dats wad i heard dat loads of JC student can't cope wif de heavy project in de beggining when they enter uni? -

i've decided to choose poly instead of jc but still unsure of which courses.
either accountancy, banking and financial services or tourism and hospitality management.
i'm taking poa now but not really good in it so i doubt i will be interested in taking accountancy course but heard that accountants are in high demand in market.
it's pretty irony that i used to want study poa so much that i strived hard to get into the class that takes poa but now i dislike poa alot.
banking and financial services is another course which i think is useful. in my opinion, most of the business-related courses are useful.
fashion design is my interest but i wouldn't want it as my job.
tourism and hospitality management is my interest too. if i have a diploma in it, i'd choose to work in the airport as i like the atmosphere there.
certainly i'm a very confused person. my mind changes very fast. everybody wishes to have a job of their interest, so do i.
i would like to experience different jobs in the future so thought of taking a diploma then work to gain some experience before being a teacher but i'm afraid i couldn't really take up the job of a teacher well and might quit after 3 years of contract so i'd have to use my diploma into getting other jobs.
i'd like to find out how are all the 3 courses in poly?
anybody taking accountancy, banking and financial services or tourism and hospitality management courses now?
please share your views on these courses.

my advice is do not base your course selection just because there is high demand in the industry now.
12 years ago there were too many lawyers and intake was reduced, 7 years later there became a shortage. 10 years ago IT is hot stuff till the dot-com burst, and IT became cheap stuff. Now there is a shortage of accounting grads... currently nus, ntu, smu and many private schools are rapidly churning out lots of accounting grads. accounting grads in the BIG 4 comparatively receive 30% less starting pay as compare to their peers in engineering.
follow your interests so u will not regret it in the future. nevertheless it is never too late to change. btw, your other options (fashion design, tourism, hospitality management) shows good economic potential in the future, esp in singapore. -

With a polytechnic diploma, you can earn perhaps $2,000 a month, but options for further education (that means university) will remain very limited due to your premature specialisation. Be smart, take the JC route and keep your options open. You sound very indecisive so if I were you, I wouldn't think that picking my career path right now would be a sane thing to do.
A diploma is in actuality worth less than an advanced level certificate. Think about it. -
if you arent 100% confident of what you want to do, JC is the safest route for you.

but i don't think i'd be able to handle jc life. it would be too stressed for me as i'm not the very studious kind.

and the moment you touch (not literally) a sec sch student eg hit them, they would complain to principal straight away unlike pri sch students which i've experienced it before that a teacher slap or hit a student and he/she would not say anything about it even to parents, let alone complaining.
of course having to say that, i'm not implying that i would hit my students in the future. haha.
but personally i feel that sec sch students are more fun interacting with. -
