there r different type of monks
mostly chan zong, the 'si da jie kong' type like ren ci boss
and the mi zong, the more relaxed type like taiwan's flashy celebrity nun as reported in sundaytimes
there r also some dat enter monkhood for a certain period of time like every thai male have to become monk once in their life. and sg's jason oh who became monk for 3 yrs den return to normal life(sundaytimes). these short-term monks obviously cant/wont si da jie kong. as a result they drive car, buy ipod etcetc. If any monks have valid reasons to do that, it is certainly not a problem.
All he had to do is to go forward and ask the monk kindly. I'm 100% sure the monk has valid reasons for buying it, as it is impossible that a monk use it for personal purposes.Originally posted by rane:hiphop, if TS is so genuinely concern about monks buying whatever, suggests he goes talk to the shi fu ming yi from Ren Ci. but I doubt his sincerity. From my experience when vast majority of the christians talk about monks or others from other religions their motives of doing so are questionable, and this Aloof is no exception.![]()

for ur infor, some monks hav their personal jobs outside, dey practise buddhism because of their own interest, therefore, monk driving mercedes is ok with me, coz many of these monks are actually CEO of big companies.
u think every monk is poor or wad meh? of course la, monk go buy 4D toto is too far le, coz teachings prevent dem from doing so. but buying branded goods and driving big cars doesnt mean dat dey are using money from donations in the temple....You can be 100% certain that a person who wears the robes of a monk and buys 4D is surely a fake monk, as fake monks are a really really common thing nowadays.. and really lucrative because so many people have no ideas that those monks cannot even beg for money outside. I have posted a website in a previous post.

Very nice language. Clearly a shame to your religion.
Most churches are transparent about their budget and post them in annual bulletins. Temples.. im not too sure. (Please dont say im judging agn but i've never heard of them doing it before)

Anyway, what aloof was trying to bring to our attention was why the need to buy such expensive electronic stuffs? Also where the monk get the money?
Donation?
For broadcasting of chanting sutras in the temple?Much more than that, of course. Anyone who has been to a dharma center or a monastery should know what activities are going on there -- like dharma talks, meditation classes, youth classes, and lots and lots of various activities.
But was it really necessary to spend that kind of wasteful money assuming that money was from the donation?Obviously they have their own reasons and purposes -- just that you never ask them and assume too much.
And IF really a necessity for the temple why not get those donors to get it for the temple instead of the monk going to get it himself? It is difficult to communicate with everyone what they want. Anyway the money is all donated by the donars also mah. Also, maybe the lay follower was there also - but just got the monk to come along.
Weren't monks supposedly to be 'si da jie kong'? IPOD is a branded electronic item. The monk should not be buying branded stuffs when their teaching was to live as simply and hassle free as possible.I would agree not to rely too much on branded, but from my experience the iPod is worth every single cent for the quality and features... I didn't buy it just because of brand. The local brand Creative is even more expensive.
And that brought us to the question of buying it as presents for families or even the orphanage. Why the need for such indulgence? These are only a few examples. Maybe buy for Buddhist schools leh? Anyway within Buddhist organisations they already need such things for various purposes.
Sure, the families , friends or the orhphange live in a modern world but wouldn't it be more worthy of the monk by imparting/impounding his teaching/the sutras to his families or friends? That would be more beneficial to them and also to himself since he was helping others to recognize their true self and also helping them to accumulate good karma not to mention for himself as well? These equipments may precisely be used for spreading the teachings.
Also take note that most very expensive things like cars are likely donated entirely by lay followers themselves.Originally posted by hiphop2009:but buying branded goods and driving big cars doesnt mean dat dey are using money from donations in the temple....
the temple accepts them and the monks drive them? i have not seen monks driving cars but yea just making a pt that they should not accept them. Public transport is efficient enough.Originally posted by An Eternal Now:Also take note that most very expensive things like cars are likely donated entirely by lay followers themselves.

You can be 100% certain that a person who wears the robes of a monk and buys 4D is surely a fake monk, as fake monks are a really really common thing nowadays.. and really lucrative because so many people have no ideas that those monks cannot even beg for money outside. No real monk (supposedly that there is a real monk that wants to buy 4D, although thats totally unlikely) will be so stupid to buy 4D because those witnesses can report about his behaviors and he will be disrobed.
Not all monasteries accept them.. or rather not all monasteries have followers that are so rich to donate cars... some do. Anyway it is quite rude to reject a lay person's offering unless it is really against Buddhist rules... I think a car used for convenience should be ok.. the reason why a Buddhist monk won't anyhow reject people's offerings is because according to Buddhist teachings we shouldn't just anyhow deny someone's good-will and merit making opportunity.. and especially he his intent and willingness is strong.. it's also just not so nice.Originally posted by aloof_guy:the temple accepts them and the monks drive them? i have not seen monks driving cars but yea just making a pt that they should not accept them. Yea why not? A fake monk would just use his convenience to buy 4D when he passes the shop... he wouldn't bother travelling miles away back to his place to change. He doesn't have the pressure of 'being disrobed' -- he isn't a monk to begin with, he is just on a commercial trip to beg as much money as possible from ignorant people. He can let all the people see him in his monks robes and no one would give a damn... which would be a very different case for a real monk, who will get into serious trouble.Originally posted by aloof_guy:Sorry but would a fake monk wear his monk robes to buy 4D?
