er... differentiate between animals and insects (especially pests), although they are all living things. Generally people feel no guilt when killing small things, especially disgusting creepy crawlies, or things that appear ugly to them.
Convert to Jainism, an extreme religion in India where they are not supposed to hurt any living thing, even plants or light a fire using wood cause there are organisms living in the piece of wood. I have no idea what they eat also.

But face it. In reality there can only be a certain extent that we can do to not harm living things. Well as long as you don't kill them for fun, or torture them, then you can still be an animal lover. -

Microbes are living things as well, I believe majority of us have at one point ate yogurt, drink Yakault or Vitagen just for the sake of health.
Why are we mistreating them?
Just because bacteria are harmful?
Think along the same lines. Why aren't ants being treated just as well? Them being small? Bite? Harmful? Kills? (by the way, they do kill, read up on fire ants)
And the reason for protecting them? Balance the ecosystem? They are animals as well? Equality?
