If you truly want to assist, then spend your own time and effort (money even) to support the needy directly. I.e., spend time over the weekend to DIRECTLY help the needy with money to purchase their necessities.
I have quite a few friends who do this over the weekends, and I am impressed with them.
Sadly, I have no such inclinations as yet. -

My friends wanted to test him. Instead of pointing out the one they wan, they actually speak to him.
Friend A: Erm, I'd like to have that mickye mouse.
And guess what? That ang moh actually understood even though the sign saying he is mute or deaf. Either he knows lip-reading or he's a fake.

Everytime I see someone holding a plastic folder moving towards me, I will form a "no" in my mind already. Thats the bad impression pushy charities gave me -
I used to put old unused arcade tokens into cans that school kids that walk around pestering people at MRT.
I miss doing that since most arcades don't use tokens anymore. And i eventually ran out of it.
i would always laugh when i think about some idiot opening the can to find arcade tokens in it. -

Then after it closed down i had the tokens with me still so it became useless even though it cost money.
So i "donate" away =P -
well if they really pester u.. u can always ask for their document for proof, if they doubt that mean buff.. if better still attempt to call police if they turn uglry..

every donation , $2 commission . standard price among most of the so called charity organization.
recently simlim square suddenly pop out a lot of these idiots , really feel like killing them sometimes because they scared away my customers -_- -
Some lagi best... tell you charity and then you buy the pen... after you flip open the packaging you see a slip telling you that you're not helping a charity organisation...

Always happens.. they tell you a sad story saying a mere $10 that you can easily forego would make a big diff to the live of "the little girl in the news article" and if that's not enough they'll add on crap like "Even though I'm sick, I'm out working to collect donations for the sake of this little girl" yadah yadah.. however once you turn them down there's an immediate 360 degree change in attitute and they'll give u a rude stare and walk off.
