The singapore zoo dun have gorillas. They will never have that. They are banned from having gorillas.

The zoo, back in maybe 2000 or before, was really a great zoo for education and conservation, under the leadership of Bernard Harrison - the CEO of Singapore Zoo from 1990s to 2002. It was a zoo with a soul.
And also under his leadership and initiatives, we have the first Night Safari in the world.
He has left the post of CEO a few years ago, but many hospitality industry ppl and media still remember him as the Zoo's man.
The current management has lotsa exposure, publicity and press releases on themselves esp on Ms Fanny Lai. But these days people still don't really know who she is. I hope they can get Bernard Harrison back to lead the zoo. He's the guy with Charisma! During his time, all staff, from the junior zookeepers to the directors, all loved Bernard Harrison. They all work for the passion for the job and the company.
For the purpose of making the zoo a place to educate our future generations about wildlife conservation, the zoo should be led by a person with zoological background or training in veterinarian. -

I ate elsewhere with my Aussie guest before heading there.
The burgers there weren't bad though when I went there another time.
If you still MUST eat at the damn place, have dinner at Ben & Jerry's there before 6pm.

They will know how to make money out of F & B. This may not be wrong, after all, they used to sell "cheese burger + upsize the drinks". But they can never understand the essence of a good zoo.
Like what I said, long time ago, during Bernard Harrison's time while Dr Cheng (a veteran in animals and vet), the zoo had a soul. They didn't have colourful F & B outlets that sell expensive pizzas. But when a person stepped in, he/she would know this was a learning zoo, a zoo that promotes & helps animal conservation. -

Hotel price understandable but at the Zoo ???? Like I say, where is Singapore heading to ??? Agree. Hotel and zoo are two different things. i dun think it's cheap to care for the animals - staff to tend to them, medical care, food, etc... so maybe that's why the high prices.

African elephant very few zoo have it as they are hard to control ... so few zoo keep them.

They change a nice logo - to a one that look like it is drawn by a little kid !!! So horrible !!! - also costly - a change in logo - everything signs, letterhead, brouches everything have to redo and reprint !!!
When they change logo that time a lot of people voice out and wrote in, the reply was very yaya papaya type !!! -
Singapore Zoo is probably the best place to work in Singaproe.
Fanny Lai joined in 2003 straight to become Marketing Director, drawing $12,000 a month. In last than three months, the then Executive Director who loved the zoo so much, suddenly made a drastic decision to quit.
And Fanny Lai was promoted to Executive Director immediately, even though she doesn't write well, nor having any veterian or zoological background. Her background was selling hamburgers and french fries.
In last than 1 year, the Singapore Zoo paid her $180,000 to do an Executive MBA with University of Chicago. Then the zoo also bought her a car.
Recently, because she was a divorcee, she couldn't live with her husband's house, the zoo built a bunglow behind Night Safari for her, her son and a maid to live.
Not bad huh? The Zoo is the probably the best place to work.

But where does the animal adoption money, direct donation and animal conservation fund go to?
How much money make/raise actually go to the well keeping of the animals?

someone long also mention that the singapore government subsidaries the zoo - each singaporean visitor - SG gov pay $1 to the zoo.
Not sure if this is true or if it is true still valid. Can someone verify that. -

hm. no need go zoo la. just top up ezlink card. take train from 1 end to another. i guarantee u can see alot uncivilised "animals" on e train. just like a zoo.

I personally dun like fanny lai's style of management, give me harrison any day, but i kinda feel that its not really her fault that the zoo has turned into a flashy mall of sorts.
Blame the gahmen for pulling the plug on funding. Last time the zoo received substantial gahmen grants, but not any more, so the zoo has to find ways to make its own money. F&B is the least controversial way for the zoo to earn revenue.
I agree the drink prices there are murderous, so its best to pack yur own drinks when you visit. As for admission fees, you really have to take a look at zoos overseas for a quick comparison. Believe it or not even night safari admission is cheap compared to say Crocodile hunter's zoo in australia.
And for $15 zoo admission, you are getting serious value for money. $15 lets you spend up to 9.5 hours at the place. All the shows are free. I dun see anyone complaining when paying $9 for a 1.5 hour movie.
