The prizes are not good enough to attract the really outstanding ones to join this contest. Even if they win the chances of making it big in the entertainment industry is not great as lots of competition from the other girls like the actresses or models. How many really of the past MSU continued to make a name for themselves after winning their crown? Only a handful. Most of them just fade away. Or for some if they are lucky enough they manage to land themselves a golden tortoise and become a trophy wife while others, well, just become rich men's mistresses or plaything for a few years. From there they might scrape enough by and then start their own business once the rich boyfriend gets tired of them. But hey, it's a better life than the average Singapore girls who have to slog for long hours and years sacrificing their personal life so they could save enough to start their dream business, which by then they would be somewhere in their mid mid 30s?
