The effects of donating are already quite painful...Originally posted by MooKu:ohh okie...
hmm they should include it every blood drive...
i think not enough people are educated about bone marrow donation...

But I doubt it is totally painless even post-extraction.
Aiyer come on, the effects won't last that long. It's a life you're saving! It's probably at least 40 years of life you're giving!Originally posted by :Only on condition that all my medical expenses will be covered 100% including any

Odo depends on who I'm donating to..... I'm afraid I'm not so noble to donate to any Tom, Dick or Harry, Mary, Jane or Lucy.........

yup!Originally posted by the Bear:that's how i feel.. it's only pain.. it'll pass..
a gift.. a donation.. i won't want anything in return, and it's to be given with no conditions whatsoever...
that's me.. and how i think of things.. if it was given with conditions, it's not a gift anymore.. it'll be.. trade...

Q: CAN I SAY "NO"?
A: A volunteer donor who is successfully matched with a transplant patient may decide not to go ahead with the process. There are legitimate reasons for saying “no”, including illness, the risk involved or even fear. While the BMDP respects the decision of the matched donor, uncommitted donors give false hope to patients awaiting transplants. Once a donor gives his or her consent on the “Intent to Donate” form, the patient actually begins pre-transplant treatment. So when a donor decides to pull out at any stage after the endorsement, the patient will most likely die without a transplant. The BMDP hopes that you will be committed to your participation as a bone marrow donor.

but then the statement seems to indicate the patient dies because of the decision to pull out instead of just getting an extra chance to live if you decide to help![]()

Don't simply answer my question with "Yes" or "No"... If you said "Yes", hopefully when you pass by any of the donor centers, you will pop in and have your finger pricked. If you don't have your blood test done, you won't be notified and you won't be able to help when there's a patient in need.
And also again... I'm going in mid-May, so if anyone I know is interested in coming along with me, PM me!If we have enough people, we could make it an outing.
If she needs a bone marrow transplant, she is likely to be infertile after the chemotherapy. Don't expect children....Originally posted by Fatum:isn't that such a charming, romantic thought ? ....

He is probably talking about doing a bone marrow aspirate and trephine biopsy. That is done under local anaesthesia and depending on the doctor and/or patient, can be painful to varying degrees. If the sample is too small or unrepresentative (a common problem with inexperienced junior doctors), it will have to be repeatedOriginally posted by the Bear:marrow extraction will probably KILL the donor from shock if not done under GE...
