Particularly if the patient have a low pain threshold or not affected by anaesthesia.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:He is probably talking about doing a bone marrow aspirate and trephine biopsy. That is done under local anaesthesia and depending on the doctor and/or patient, can be painful to varying degrees. What's that? When is it done?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:He is probably talking about doing a bone marrow aspirate and trephine biopsy. A bone marrow aspirate is sucking up blood cells from the centre of a bone to see if the blood elements are healthy. For bone marrow trephine, you take a sharp trochar (like a kind of spear with a hollow core), pierce it into the centre of the hip bone to remove a core of bone marrow tissue for the pathologist to see if it is healthy.Originally posted by MooKu:What's that? As a diagnostic test, only local anaesthesia is usually applied and that can be quite painful. For harvesting marrow, multiple aspirates have to be taken and many places now offer general anaesthesia or at least, regional anaesthesia.
If I remember correctly, they did use a syringe to draw blood....when I pledged many years ago, not sure about now.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Not too much of a problem... except that I hate people pricking my finger for blood... I rather they use a syringe...
