some say it's to structure your words properly, some say it has to be clear and concise, some say it's how well u can speak, express yourself and articulate. but they're not the same thing. i can tell you in excellent english "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.", but you won't have an idea what i'm talking about. meanwhile, some of the jokes made here in the postings are typed in what some of us would consider horrendous english, but you can still understand what they mean. in fact, if they're in 'proper english', there won't be any joke at all. we oso typ lik dis in our fone msg wth frds, and yet we do just fine.
it's definitely important to be understood, and that's what everyone tells you. but you start wondering what the big fuss is all about since everyone around you understands you just fine. instead, what they often teach you is to write and speak in certain ways just to make you sound correct (read as more educated). which is unfortunately what you do need to get ahead in life... -
