Reduce use of plastic bags is a good exercise.
however, pls note that not all items can fit into our bags unless we bring big bags for our shopping. have you seen people shop for groceries... the shopping is humongous....
recycling is a great effort but it needs to be tackled properly and education as well as encouragement is required.
in singapore, our humidity does not allow us to leave our rubbish overnight or over a week before we throw out the rubbish. in cooler climates, people actually throw out their trash maybe once in a few days via a large rubbish trash bag. so more trash is collected and less bags are used.
here, we need to bag our refuse and throw it out daily or we'll stink.
not having plastic bags to dump our rubbish, please then tell us what to do with the rubbish? ofcourse we can buy plastic bags then, then it won't really be a successful reduce exercise right? furthermore, if you buy plastic bags in bulk, it'll cost you less than 10 cents per bag... so isn't the retailer making a "profit" ... even in the name of donation?
why are our recycling bins a failure? have you seen how inconvenient our recycling bins are placed? and what other recycling efforts do we have?
and in my time, i am sad to say i have never witness a collection from the recycle bins around my place... maybe i suay... never see... just see those bins become so dirty and filled with junk instead of recycle materials.
we need to recycle and save our planet. but we also need more measures and better measures than this. -

and i don't go shopping at all often, so i don't even use alot of plastic bag at all, i rather use my own plastic bag to carry those grocery, then to pay cents, just to raise awareness
it is already a clear cut case of double standard
those major supermarket, has not been practising this culture at all, now they are advocate this sort of thing

Maybe they think S'poreans have gotten used to such a culture, they think that it will implemented as easily as the govt's pay increase.

Wats the point of saving a measly 10 cents, while you live in a polluted environment? Saving 10 cents is more important than your own health and the health of your children?
Whats more irritating is seeing adults, working adults being measly about buying a plastic bag just so they can save 10 cents... For wat?? So you can buy your favourite drink from the vending machine?? Singaporeans are getting too pampered... Plastic bag not free, then just sit down and whine about it... It is about the way they are doing things.
As you have said, the main purpose is to promote environmental consciousness. So educating is the main point here, but it somehow turned out to be taken the form of punishment.

Great isn't it, Singapore is already so famous for fines everywhere. No matter how to try to argue that this is just promoting less-usage of plastic bags, it will appear in foreigners' eyes that Singaporean need to have a 10 cent charge placed there so they will be conscious enough to bring their own bags. -
