Anyone climbed Mount Kinabalu before?
I'm hoping for experienced climbers to provide some advices on lodging and ascending tips.

How fit does one have to be, to climb Kota Kinabalu?

I think fitness is no big issue here, it's not even close to everest
4 intact limbs, some cardio endurance and ability to stand against attitude sickness.. that should do -

You do not need to be super fit. But you need to do some preparatory conditioning. Mount K, although high, is fairly easy to climb. The terrain is fairly easy.
But you have to be careful not to rush the climb if this is your first climb above 2000m. Some people may be prone to altitude sickness.
It is a two day climb. The first day, you climb to Laban Rata which is a rest point. Most people should reach by late noon. Try to be early so that you can get more rest. More importantly, there is no heater for shower. Once the sun sets, you'll get freezing water. Have dinner and rest.
Then at 3/4 am, you will start the second part of the ascent. Some will struggle to climb in the dark. Good to have head lamps so your hands are free to climb the ladders.
Near the peak, take small and steady steps as the air is thin. It will take more effort to walk a few metres. Don't try to go up fast even if you see that the peak is near. Most people will be breathless. However, if possible, try to be at the peak to watch the sunrise. It is spectacular! Furthermore, there is no vegetation at the top. In the late morning, it is unbearably scorching. That is I advised to do some training before you go. You don't want to be too slow climbing up.
The wind is strong at the peak, so bring a windbreaker. Bring sunblock and lip gloss if you need. Bring sleeping bag also. Bring a small bag for your ascent to the peak. This is so that you can leave the heavy stuff at Laban Rata and collect it on your way down.
The downward journey is quite tiring. The steps that made the climb up easy, puts a lot of stress on the knees.
That's all I can remember. Note that, I went to Mount K. 10 years back. I am not sure if the facilities have changed.
For a sum, you can hire porters to carry your bag. That is how I saw an old lady climb up the mountain. I think she was more than 60 years old. -
Mount Kinabalu is booked fully up till like Sept. You have to make your prep way in advance.

Is it possible to tell who will be more prone to altitude sickness? -
Mount Kinabalu is around 4000+++m in height right?
actually the degree of difficulty is low..cos of the gentle slopes
easier to climb than Mount Ophir cos Ophir is different from Kinabalu I think
the trail is gentler unlike Ophir where you are literally crawling on the floor when you are climbing -

nvr make it to summit though...
to me it was easier than ophir but it was mentally killing me coz 5hr++ continuously walk up mountain sibei sian..
u haf to go up summit at 2am morning.. i nvr go up summit coz to lazy n tired

I 'semi-retire' liao Not fit already lah.
I went up twice. The second time up was a better experience because I was able to pace myself at the top and was able to enjoy the sunrise
The last "tall" mountain I climbed was Gunung Tahan. That was the toughest I ever climbed. I agree Ophir is a tougher climb than Kinabalu.

For those going, try to go whitewater rafting after the climb. Or go to one of the islands. Fantastic experience and a way to relax after the climb, that is if you can walk properly

I just climbed Mt. Kinabalu last month. Definitely something not to be missed. The scenary alone from the top is worth all the hard work up and down the mountain.
Oh, i went in April, started planning in Dec last year. Even a 5mth gap is not enough to book individually..
Its like i called the National Parks on Dec 28th ask for 5 slots, they say have.
Then i call on Dec 29th to confirm, they say all taken up.. All the bleddy travel agents and Tour agenices book everything up..
Anyway, go thru individual pay arnd 300RM for permit, guide, stay at Laba Rata, transport from airport to National Parks, cert.. etc.. But all must find on your own, so a bit hectic..
But go thru agent ah.. Everything they do for you.. very little hassle, more convienent too.. -
