Back in those days when I wasn't driving coz I couldn't yet afford a car, I ALWAYS give up my seat to whoever I deem needs it more. And that was even when before the Courtesy Campagne...
I remember back in the 70s, people on buses AUTOMATICALLY give their seats to elderly folks and pregnant ladies. No Public Education was needed, people just knew how to be a Person (Hokkien: "Ay hiow cho lang..")
Today, everybody pretends not to see an elderly person or a pregnant lady. Most will pretend to sleep. Some just sit and ignore...
Isn't it suppose to be that the more Singapore advanced and progressed, the people should also become more refined? No, unfortunately it is NOT the case.
Let me say what I think and believe happened to our people by and large:
>> the education system only taught people mostly to excel and how to make
money, but not how to be a Person
>> educational fees, standards, and qualifying requirements went up, but not
the way the system "educate" the young - today, teachers are even
afraid of students and parents
>> people now has to work more than just hard, but bring home lesser, and
and the anxiety of losing their jobs to foreigners are often heavy on the
minds and hearts
>> costs of everything has gone up countless times, and therefore people
feel they should get their money's worth - why should they stand for the
price they pay?
So you see, a relentless system of money-making from the people, a No Free Lunch Society, will give you a No Free Lunch type of people who believes everyone regardless of age, should find their own way, their own living, as well as their own seats....
People in Singapore I feel, aren't naturally Ungracious.
Ungraceousness came from our Government!!!!
