its not wrong to call people of this region Malays generally, although you can divide them into many smaller groupsOriginally posted by Meat Pao:Hi,
No it is wrong.....Indonesia's Christians are mostly not Malays.
They are actually from other ethnic groups.....Batak....Minahasa....several others.
A lot of confusion on this term 'Malay'.
In Indonesia, there are ethnic Malays, but they are mostly on parts of Sumatra, and they are only 1 ethnic group among the dozens or hundreds of different ethnic groups in Indonesia.
Indigenous people in Indonesia are very diverse. Malays are in relatively small numbers and only in some regions of Sumatra. The majority of them are Muslims. Other indigenous ethnic groups who are majority Christians, or have significant Christian population, are of different groups altogether.
This term 'Malay' is name of an ethnic group only, it should not be used as a broad 'race' or 'sub-race' for the whole indigenous people in South-East Asia. For instance, you cannot call the indigenous Filipino Catholics as 'Malays', although in the southern part of Phillipines there is indeed a Malay ethnic group who are Muslims, but the northern part of Phillipines are not ethnic Malays.
This 'Malay' term is only referring to ethnicity, dont keep getting it wrong.
I see this again and again.
Meat Pao.
I guess it is the same with China?Originally posted by Meat Pao:Same with this term 'Malay'. Many people are abit confused and just use this term wrongly. This term only refers to the Malay ethnic group. You cannot call other Indonesians who are ethnic Balinese, or Batak, or Minang, etc, as Malays.
What small percentage? The whole Philippines is Malay ChristiansOriginally posted by Imotep:Hi, I was just wondering whether there are any other Malay Christians out there??
I know the percentage is small in an already small Malay community but I just wanna know.

Noah, theory and reality don't match. He whom many called God is good in blessing HIs evil children to prosper. So many evil christians are doing so well, prospering and some good sincere christians are suffering under these evil christians. He chooses who he wants to bless, so christians must be evil in order to receive blessings from God! Ha ha ha!! God god god, got or not!!! ha ha ha!!! What a good laugh!!!Originally posted by noahnoah:x 2

'Chinese' is a bigger general term. It is a broad term. We can say Tibetans are Chinese, Yunnan tribe people are Chinese. But 'Malay' is not a broad general term. The position is smaller and more specific, just like Yunnan tribal people or Tibetans in the example above.Originally posted by Icemoon:I guess it is the same with China?
We cannot call Tibetans, Manchurians, those Yunnan tribal people .. chinese.
What a shame then, to name the whole region as the Malay Archipelago, when Malaya is not even the largest member.Originally posted by Meat Pao:So......that is the confusion about the use of this term 'Malays'. If people want to refer to native peoples in Indonesia in the broad general sense, just say 'Indonesians' or 'Native Indonesians' or something like that, but not 'Malays'.
