What's with the whitening?

One thing that completely puzzles me is why Singaporean women are obsessed with being white. All the ads for whitening cream pop up on screen every 5 minutes it's insane. And what's worse is the ad for whitening sunscreen. "Go to the beach and stay white!" I mean WTF!! Isn't the point of going to the beach to get a tan? I mean women all around the world are trying to get tans and some even get artificial tans coz they want it so bad but here in Singapore all the women are the exact opposite. Do they think it makes them look good looking like an albino ghost? Someone please explain I am sooo confused.

Depends on which type of girls / women....if you're young its ok to be darker...but when you are older....frequent sun tanning will age your skin faster...

Well sorry to tell you this but being fair doesn't look very good on girls IMO and the opinion of every other guy I've asked. Getting a tanned skin will project the image that u toil hard in the fields....like a poor peasant.......and fair skin...means u rarely toil, so u are high class and refined....
In cold n rich countries...its different....getting tanned skin means you are sporty, like to out to the sun....while fair skin means you seldom go out....so its unhealthy....

I used to like being tanned and all. (i am a guy here) But i have since realised too much exposure to the sun will cause premature ageing.
People with tanned skin may look good for a while but it wont last. How long can you maintain that tan look? how much longer do you want your skin to be exposed to the sun? Sunblock and suntan lotion do little to protect anyone from harmful rays causing skin diseases and cancer. This is according to most chemistry professionals in NUS who have done a lot of research on sunblock lotion.
People with fair skin are probably better off in the long run. -

Yes.....but I think Singapore might be abit different from the rest in South-East Asia. But just abit.....
Because it is the richest country.....and no fields.....and no peasants....And majority are naturally light-skinned (Chinese)....so I think it's a bit of mix....some will go that side of idea that being tanned is sporty and likes to go out.....while some still think of that side of idea that it means low-class.....
But I think majority will still think tanned is low class...... -Y no matter if 50 years from now....why I think like this.....coz I compare with the richest nation in Asia and who is way farther north....Japan......in fact many whitening products come from Japan.....so I think Singapore society also wont go to very far from this idea...... -Y -
