GHAZNI, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A military operation to rescue the remaining 21 Korean hostages held by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan began on Wednesday, hours after a Taliban deadline expired, a provincial official said.
"The operation has started," said Khowja Seddiqi, the district chief of Ghazni's Qarabagh district, where the Taliban kidnapped 23 Korean Christian volunteers nearly two weeks ago.
He did not give more details or say which forces were involved. -

Go find out the who is in the leadership council of the Taliban (sure they can get this list easily one), then go kidnap all their relatives, then can us these prisoner to exchange for their own family members...
(maybe 10 Taliban relatives to 1 Korean prisoner)

Put it this way. You accede to the exchange and next thing you know, every terrorist/revolutionary group will be using this tactic. No foreigner will be safe on the streets. If the Taliban prisoners are released, they will go on and kill more people. Kidnapping people does not inflict physical harm on the hostages. If everyone follows the rules, the hostages will be released. You may even buddy buddy with your kidnappers.
Kidnapping may be the most peaceful way of achieving your objective. You can blow up the US embassy, intimidating the enemy. Or you can take hostages. -

It will be counterproductive for a government to exchange hostages for prisoners IMO. It takes a lot to catch an insurgent while you can grab hostages anywhere off the streets. -
The koreans are silly, why go to this country to do volunteer work in hospital, better go Africa to help those children, the government should warn them of the danger if they go to Afgan or Iraq,

Thats right, Taliban will start actively kidnapping any foreigner they can lay their hands on so they can continue trading hostages for prisoners. And Afghan govt cannot promote it. So Afghan govt cannot be blamed also.
We cannot just think of these current S. Korean hostages without seeing future reprecussions if the Afghan govt allows a trade. If so, next time Taliban will capture another bigger group of foreigners.
I guess the only way is to conduct a raid or some special ops to rescue them already, which will be very difficult seeing that they are all hidden in different locations and some of them health is deteriorating rapidly. -
Actually, the Korean Foreign Ministry did warn Koreans not to go to Afghanistan but the churches and pastors choose otherwise. S. Korea, US agree no force to free Afghan hostages

MANILA: South Korea and the United States have ruled out the possibility of military operations to secure the release of South Koreans held in Afghanistan, a South Korean official said Thursday.
South Korean Foreign Minister Song Min-soon and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte discussed the hostages during a meeting in Manila on Thursday on the sidelines of an Asian security conference, the Foreign Ministry official said.
"The two sides ruled out the possibility of military operations and placed a top priority on safely resolving the issue by mobilizing all means," Song said after the meeting, the official said. He asked not to be named, citing the sensitivity of the issue.
"The United States is not preparing military operations," he quoted Song as saying.
South Korea's government said Wednesday that there would not be any military operations without its consent.
The Taliban kidnapped 23 South Koreans from a bus in southern Afghanistan on July 19 and has shot two of them to death. It is threatening more killings unless the Afghan government releases insurgent prisoners.
Eight senior members of South Korea's National Assembly left for Washington on Thursday to urge U.S. officials to take an "active and positive" approach to the crisis, amid widespread perceptions that Washington is key to ending the crisis by influencing Afghanistan's government.
Song indicated there were difficulties in ending the crisis because of a U.S. policy of refusing to negotiate with terrorists, but vowed to resolve the issue while keeping intact the anti-terror principle, the South Korean official said, without elaborating.
South Korea and the U.S. have agreed to "mobilize all realistic means available" to secure the hostages' freedom, the official said.
South Korea warned earlier that it would not "sit by and watch" if the Taliban kills more captives, prompting speculation that a military option might be possible.
The families of the remaining hostages have voiced strong opposition to the use of force out of fears it would lead to mass deaths.
Foreign ministers at the Manila conference, sponsored by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, have expressed concern about the kidnapping and about the security situation in Afghanistan.
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said South Korea should not consider paying ransom to free its citizens.
He did not respond directly to a question on whether force should be used, but said that if they were Australians, that option would certainly be considered.
"We wouldn't rule anything out except paying ransom," he said.

THe issue is with the Taliban, innocent missionary who are there just to help and the US and Afaghn government.
I don't think its justifiable that one should help another innocent party to threaten the release of some other guilty party. -
