But how often do you all get the tuner to visit, really?

If it's out of tune, you'll have to tune it right?Originally posted by eagle:actually u can just buy a tuner and check whether it goes out of tune... can't u?
not really, cause the type of tuner used by these piano technicians are different, and most go by years of experience and hear through their ears. And the adjustments of those hammer, pad, and tightening of strings is not easy. Dont forget that some mysterious coins do somehow gets into the piano, and these people would be the one repairing and retrieving.Originally posted by eagle:actually u can just buy a tuner and check whether it goes out of tune... can't u?
same, every 6 months too, not cheap to get that fellow down too. So im thinking of learning how to tune, anyone knows where i can learn?Originally posted by MooKu:Hmmm we're supposed to tune the piano once every 6 months right?

i am still a student.. so $12k is pretty a lot. i'm looking for something tt can last me for 3 - 4 yrs, i'll get a better one when i start working.Originally posted by Stoat:i tink a gd kawai piano can get for abt 12k? tis kind of ting cannot save wan... is u buy lousie good den after 7-8 yrs u fine tat e music u produce is limited by the instrument so haiz~ bang head n die gg
Seriously, a good piano will last you a lifetime. Provided you tune and service regularly twice a year. Currently for upright piano's the kawai brand is the best on the market in terms of quality, technology, and price. Technically a grand piano will always be better than an upright...price costs alot more too. Think about 20-30k. But if you live in an apartment a grand piano is gonna disturb ur neighbours for sure so erm you don't want that.
Anyway 12k isn't much if you're gonna use it for the next 40 years. That's $25 a mth without accounting for inflation.
Things to look out for:
Soundboard Design - check the number of backposts, ensure it is made of good quality quarter-sawn spruce.
Hammer Mouldings - should be mahogany
Duplex Scale - does it come with this?
Agraffes - does it comes with this?
Tone release system - what kind of technology are they using?
Piano Action - again what kind of technology? does the touch feel right? is it responsive? can it play the most demanding pieces? visual kei and most j-rock are quite demanding
btw if you are buying second-hand which i strongly don't recommend, the serial number will tell you the year in which the piano is made. some sellers are dishonest and may tell you the wrong date to fetch a better price. good luck.
thanks!Originally posted by TYING:You can get pianos at any price even at a few hundred bucks, its the quality that is being compensated in the end. You can try ard peace centre or paradiz centre. There are second hand instrument dealers. Or there is one at bukit timah plaza, a little more ex and the piano is in a better condition.
