SINGTEL'S Internet service arm, SingNet, picked up 17,000 new broadband customers in the quarter ended Sept 30, which has helped it maintain the No. 1 spot in Singapore's competitive broadband market.
SingTel chief executive for Singapore Allen Lew said the new subscribers were people who had moved here from overseas as well as residents who had not had broadband before.
Also, the company has seen success in converting existing dial-up customers to broadband, and persuading customers of rival service providers to switch to SingNet.
Singapore's broadband penetration rate stands at about 70 per cent, so Mr Lew sees room for SingNet's broadband business to grow. It is now working at convincing its 30,000 dial-up clients to take up broadband.
The company, added Mr Lew, has not suffered any negative fallout and sees 'no indication of any negative impact in the future' from a recent controversy tied to anime distributor Odex's anti-piracy efforts.
Internet users had attacked SingNet for not shielding customers accused of downloading pirated material online; Odex had obtained a court order requiring the company to release client information. Many claimed they would switch from SingNet - cancelling their contracts if need be - to a service provider that would shield them from litigious rights owners.

The boycott is going strong, keep up the good work. I'm downloading Gundam 00 and the quality is nothing short of excellent. -
I see that ODEX has not learnt their lessons. Their VCDs and DVDs are still way higher than some other discs.

It's all about making money, and Odex wants to earn big money. For business, for market, for investment, getting rich fast. Suing people for money is the FASTEST 'PROOVEN METHOD' of making MONEY FAST AND EASY.

that explains everything right?
people from oversea had no clue of whats going on and people who didnt had broadband dun d/l anime which is a few hundreds mb per episode thus not affected. -

Hmm, odex still cracking down downloaders? I say not for long.
Wait till no one want to buy their anime products or no profits for them in anime product and they stop buying license for anime then we download.
This way they can't sue us for it.
Well, this method works only if whole singaporeans are able to endure for a period of time which I doubt Singaporeans would. -

If ODEX successfully gets Pacnet to release the info, expect more of such crap in the future. -

It's not a joke if all the victims records are on the server as well. There could be a real security breach here. While it seems like some harmless defacement and a one-man job, we don't know for sure if the records are there. Somehow, me wonders if it's really the work of a prankster or another trick to gain sympathy after getting blasted?
