A degree is a bare min. for those who wants to get into more professional field.
it serves as a stepping stone ONLY though.
The rest is up to your performance+chances, and most importantly your superior, on whether they are willing to groom you.
Btw, this is not referring to govt sector. Most govt sector values A LOT on paper qualification. -

The way i see it everyone in society has two options when choosing to map out their life.
1st would be the most obvious....push yourself in academia.....reach for as high as you can go...and by this i mean, in terms of individual lifestyles and when a person feels that enough is enough and he needs to begin his career...or a popular deviation to this would be multi tasking the two....study and work...and improve yourself by targeting the market that is catered to the neediness of paper qualifications.
the 2nd option is to pick a trade...and to develop skills by practicing that trade..many think this to be a highly risky and tedious path...but i've known alot of people who succeed in this path....they are normally people who have found their calling or passion in life and paved a way for themselves through hard work and determination focused in that direction.
Example: A friend of mine is totally hopeless at academia....he hasn't the patience or time...but since young he has always liked to do this particular trade....so he enrolled in a course....practiced on his own....and pushed his way to be next in line for a creative director promotion....and he's only 23 this year...he started 3 years ago.
Another example would be myself....I could never stick to one interest so i couldn't pick a particular trade to immerse myself in....so i'm paving my path through studies....hoping to get by on paper qualifications. -

so they study very hard to get to the top
in the end, others have no choice but to study as hard

Following my father in business, i only hold a degree to be the deputy boss, my father only have an O level qualification. Nevertheless, when we interview a potential executive, we need to look for qualification, particularly we look for some kind of specialities or specialist certificate such as CPA or Qualify Chemist or specialist in SNS rather than general education. It is does important that after your degree, take up a specialist course to enhance your own value. Dun waste time on master. They are good for teacher and govt sector, in private sector, master is not much different and worst, if you cannot perform, you might be critised and laughed.
Like it or not, you are like a commodity in the market, the value you have, determind your price. If you do not upgrade, your value drop and you find yourself backdated and devalued. Last year in Singapore, about 30% of GP doctors were order to be send back to medical school to relearn /learn old and new medical practice. -

So it boils down to whether you are a risk taker or risk averse person. Jus like investments. Japanese company = emphasize on technical certs
Singaporean company = pai ma pi to climb

How useful a master is depends really on where you will be working at in the future. In some companies (especially in the public sector) there is what you people are talking about, a paper war going around. But in many companies they do not value a Master that much, since work experience is more experience and they might not be willing to pay more only because of a paper.
