If close enough, sure it's not a problem to ask.
If not very close, i also asked and i get my answer.
Just dont ask directly "how much you getting" and dont expect a exact figure(though some may tell you exact figure).
Estimate his/her salary first, then base on the way he/she spends, you can hint something to "ask".
Like "How must is the loan for your car? add on petrol and parking, it's gonna use up half of your salary, right?
Or guess his/her salary to see the response like:
"I heard your company pay quite well, every month you take home aound 4K right?" -
It's a sensitive question. Even among my close friends, we don't talk about salary.
The moment the amount comes up, the lingering question will be: does the person deserve the salary with what this person does. Next will be: what qualification does this person have to deserve the salary. Then relationship may sour...... -
it is a sensitive question. for me, if it is close friends, i will just say it is less than $xxxx or more than $xxxx.
