nowadays hor.. kids are having a life like handing them a silver platter, maths is not about how u answer the questions. it's a test on understanding and how u apply concept in. if that guy's son cant do it(even though he is from a "top" class), this means that the son is not being exposed to other kinds of problem sums. -
IMHO, I du believe that though the PSLE is only a small milestone in the academic life, or even in life itself. Get into a good secondary school, they push you into a good jc, now lagi best got IP, get into a good secondary school also gives you an extra guarantee into a good jc.
Although, some people manage to get into a good jc later on after O's, but PSLE sets the basis actually, even though it is not as significant during interviews and such.
Of course you do have a point, PSLE is not the end, but for this "bright" kiddo, I suppose such a setback during a major exam can be quite a blow, esp when hes relatively young too.
Hope everything turns out alright for him.

But really, every now and then the papers will get tough, same for the Os and As. Its really not in anyone's jurisdiction other than the SEAB's or Cambridge Syndicate's. Its hard to suck it up, but in the end theres really no point complaining.
Lastly, I really wonder how many pple the father went to collect his information from. He did mention GEP students, and he did use many sweeping statements. I believe that of course th teachers and his friends will have to say its tough, judging from his quite pompous demeanor, who dares to rub salt into his egoistic wound. (Other than in sgForums)
Who cares if he's a GEP student, good in Maths, etc etc.
You can't do = you can't apply concepts taught.

the difficulty cycled on maths & science...
but the pri school kids maths is getting tougher each year,
in year 2009, they are allowed to sit for PSLE with Scientific Calculator.
sigh. time flies eh? -
WTF?! They want easy papers for their child and score full As and wait till they suffer under more challenges which are much tougher in the future? What parents.. Comeon, it's only PSLE..

The child very "weak". As in cant take such a small setback. If he think it is hard, it is most likely that his peers will find it hard too. This is already confirmed by his father 'resources' ma. So why worry when the father should know that moderations are being practiced when allocating the marks. Making a mountain out of a molehill.

Singapore kids in general now are getting weaker and weaker mentally. In the past, kids won't get bothered by an exam paper, even one they have failed.
From my experiences, children nowadays that are acadamically not so good are mentally stronger than those who are.(because their used to not doing a paper well.) Even those who used to be not so good, but got better now acadamically are stronger mentally. The problem with those children who'd been doing well(like topping in class,top 5 etc.) is that they have worked hard and been smart(natural you can say.) since young and had never experienced failures. Or even if they do, they'd break down and cry that very moment.
I have a few friends who are like this, smart from young, so called ''genius'' and if ever a paper was set so difficult that even they could not to do it, they'd break down and cry. Even once i had a friend not finishing her paper only, and she cried.
Parents though, do not see the how failures and setbacks are able to mature a child faster than anything else. Children nowadays in this fast going society have to be able to take setbacks, and not only that but to climb up with an ongoing spirit.
A burning ongoing spirit to keep going on is all the children need, this is afterall, Youth.

comparing syllabus, u find that nowadays, it's easier and easier...
i dunno wat ppl are complaining about
and if there is something not in the textbook, ppl complain it's not taught......it's not tt it's not taught blatantly, but testing on ur analytical and problem-solving skills (soft skills), which is unfortunately lacking in most of our ppl due to the assembly-line education system.... something off the norm and all gets farked......oni the true brainers stand out....... -
She scare what..if really hard, government sure put down t-score 1 what..they won't possibly let the whole singapore so few a* 1..

one of the biggest reason is that it requires a lot better comprehension in terms of language, and inference.
My friend posted up his neighbour's daughter's Primary 5 maths questions on his blog.. and not many of us could solve it without using algebra - using only the current methods of 'trial and error', drawing models and etc. -
The A level syllabus is 100* harder and every time we take an exam, we get demoralized. And did we whine? No right? ha ha kiddos.

i had to relearn my maths from my sons before coaching them further. i remember i had so much problem when my older son was in P3. Now primary school maths is a breeze to me and i had hardly any problem coaching my younger son. -
