can you stand on the left side of escalator?

How much time will you save by walking up the escalator? My guess will be 10 seconds max for medium sized escalator.
Why do you want to save this 10 seconds? Singapore lifestyle is rush and rush, even escalator also cannot stand still?
I feel the mentality of encouraging people to rush up a escalator is wrong. For those who are in a real rush, they should definitely take the stairs, as it is less crowded and won't affect other pedestrian as much.
Don't think it is the law to stand on the left side of escalator, but if it is, I will think it is a law as stupid as the chewing gum law.
People, I urge you not to fall victim to the rat race. Enjoy life, not rush it every moment, every day at every escalator.
Be considerate, maximise the use of the escalator and stand on both side.
Be considerate, use the stairs when you are in a rush. -
After reading this thread, I started to observe the behaviours of shoppers in various shopping centres, ie. VIVO, Centrepoint, etc. (since I must educate myself)
It appears that there is no such practice to keep to your left while on escalator.
I think the reason being that the width of escalator in shopping centres are narrower and shoppers are in leisure mood.
During my observation, I didnt see anyone squeezing thru or rushing up or down the escalator.
When people dont have the habit or the practice of "keep to your left" in shopping centres, it is hard to expect ALL people to change their habit and to do so when they are in MRT stations.
So, I think we should be more accomodating, be patient and should not expect that ALL adhere to the "ruling".
Anyway, I dont think there is much time to save by rushing up/down the escalator. In fact, the act may endanger other users and pose the risk of knocking someone down the escalator.

it is the same concept as on the road. drivers who wish to be ahead drive to the right lane to over take. Imagine all slow drivers drive on all three lanes and there is a need for some drivers (e.g. due to emergency) to be ahead, there is simply no lane for them. wouldn't it be chaotic or unsensible if the drivers that need to be ahead have to horn or flash lights at the slow drivers in front? Also, you can imagine that 3 slow cars leading the pack on the road will massive road hogging at their back. Hence there is always one lane for one who wishes to be ahead and the other lanes (at least one or more) for the rest who wish to drive at their own speed. Same principle applies to MRT escalator. So please be co-operative.

most ple tend to stand at the right de mah..
i trained myself to stand at the left already.. but when i go taiwan, everybody stand at the right. the first day i was there, it was a bit hard to adjust myself. -
taiwan's road system is opposite of ours. they, by default, drive on the right lane and 'cut' on the left lane. Rushing up and down the moving escalator is dangerous.
If you want to catch the train, use the stair.
