The Malay people are believed to have originated in Borneo and then expanded outwards into Sumatra and later into the Malay Peninsula. These people were descendants of Austronesian-speakers who migrated from the Philippines and originally from Taiwan. The main foundation of this school of thought lies in the fact that the oldest Malay settlements have been discovered in Sumatra and not in the Malay Peninsula. This suggests an upward - south to north - migratory route.
'Proto malay'
Proto Malay, also known as Melayu Asli or Melayu Purba in the Malay language, is an ethnic group in Malaysia. Anthropologists traced a group of newcomers Proto Malay seafarers migrated from Yunnan to Malaysia, during the stone age period.
What im guessing is that the Proto Malay ethnic group originated from Yunnan and the other 'Malay' or Austronesian ethnic groups (including Javanese, Filipinos and the other pacific islanders) originate from Taiwan, where they moved out from during prehistoric times. Someone prove me wrong??
The majority of the Austronesian peoples (brown skinned ppl) originate from the Proto-Austronesians who were living in prehistoric Taiwan. They then moved southwards to the Phillipines, from then on occupying the malay archipelago and moving as far west as Madagascar. The oceanic austros. moved out of Taiwan to occupy most of the polynesian and micronesian islands then moved as far south as New Zealand. (Maoris!)
I dont think they are genetically related to the Chinese, though some have Chinese features, probably where there was a previous interaction between the 2 peoples in the past...
There are several similarities in language between modern bahasa 'malay' and the other austronesian languages, for example, 'mata' meaning 'eye' is a common similar word, and 'lima' or 'five' is the same in several Filipino languages, Hawaiian and other Oceanic languages...
Anyway appearance-wise Malays are very different from the Chinese, but look more like the other Austronesians like Filipinos, Indons etc... and you would certainly find a hard time trying to identify a malay from, lets say, a filipino, a polynesian and a maori... -
