Hard hat area: So that God don't drop a brick on your head?
Life vest must be worn for all exercise near or on water: So that God don't pull you under?
I used to work in the port, and every time there is a fatal accident, investigation always reveal breeches in safety procedures. Always.
But you can adhere to all the safety procedures faithfully, and accidents still happens. Investigation will reveal that some other guy lapse or breeched safety regulations.
We all need to play our part in safety. -

The point of the matter is... 5 souls were lost....
And that is important....
Let the bureaucrats and fat cats handle the meetings about safety....

I read the straits time today. From what i see, they got trapped by the floating platform at the top...10 were trapped under the platform but 5 manage to re-emerge at the other end of the platform so the 5 survivors know how to thread underwater very well.

Look at Jeremy's compact inflatable life vest. It doesn't restrict rowing movement at all.
the 2nd lifevest is the one that restricts movement, and its one of the most common types of lifevests used in dragonboating. -

What does a river do? The river flows. With a life vest on,when they're washed out from beneath the pontoon, they will at least float and be spotted sooner, whether dead or alive.
The mishap should now make all water sports enthusiasts wiser. Use the help if a motorized tow boat is available. Wear life vests. If the one provided is no good, invest in a good one where performance won't be compromised. More important than winning, it enhance safety. -

from the pic, i hope it's not him...
the more i look at the pic and description of his background, the more i realise it's him...
now he's gone... forever gone... hope he will be happy up there -

went to boon san's wake this afternoon. saw his gf is weeping.
chat wif boon san's bro n he felt the divers n organisers should have stopped the competition n start rescue immediately.
n the parents r already so sad when their son gone, wat torture them the most is the celebration of fireworks when they were living in hotel. it's like mocking at their child lost.
the bro wished dat it was a nightmare n he could wake up, but reality hurt. -

What attracts ordinary singaporeans, old and young, male or female, competitive paddlers or breast cancer survivors, to the sport that is dragonboat?
It is the universal appeal of the CAN-DO spirit, the fighting spirit. In singapore it is truly a sport that anyone can do with reasonable success, it is easy to pick up and definitely an activity that emphasizes teamwork over individuality.
For detractors who say that dragonboat is a vain or dumb sport, that dragonboaters are complacent about safety, dragonboaters like to act tough and not give up even when they should(sickness, acute fatigue), I agree but say too bad then.
I have paddled many years and only capsized twice. In all reason the casualty rate is extremely low in the sport compared to maybe running, triathlon. Of course 5 deaths is 5 deaths too many still. It's a freak accident and it will not happen again with due care.
