Sacrificing 1/4 of the army to gain control/access of the City is well worthed , higher rate of winning chances . It may seem stupid but it's a good strategy.

1. Many soliders will carry a heavy piece of wood and try to bang open the doors of the wall.
This is a stupid method as the enemy on top of the wall can shoot arrows down at them, throw big stones down and crush them to their death, pour oil down at thema nd throw fire down to burn them alive etc..
By the time they managed to break open the door and go into the city, the majority of the soliders will be dead already.
They sure will lost the war de.
2. The soliders use ladders to climb up the wall.
The enemy soliders can just push the ladders away and let them fall to their death. Even if they manage to climb up to the wall, it will be a few soliders up there fighting against thousands of soliders

I see the way they fight wars ah I wanna laugh at their stupidity man
I believe those soldiers wore helmet and carry shield when going up the ladder. And i believe they only go up the ladder when the city gates are already open and everyone is fighting and no one is throwing down rocks anymore. -

Just FYI, the period setting for the TV drama is during the bronze age (BC period). Meaning it is very long ago. Beside, you dun expect a TV drama to replicate the actual scenario of that time. Most of the thing we know about them are thru guess/studies base on artifact or record left behind by them. If u do see carefully, paper wasnt invented then. They used bamboo as a media of record. Which decay easily. Dun go ard telling the whole world how stupid ppl in the past are when all u know is so limited. Kinda make u the frog in the well. -

advancing ladders were essential to cover the people who were smashing the gates.
You can't wait for the gates to be smashed before advancing. That would make the battering ram duty a suicide mission.
Solders that got to the top aren't used to invade the city, not by a long shot. Not enough of them can get in via the ladder fast enough. But creating chaos long enough for the battering ram, that's good enough. -
