In past , in china , technology not so advance , but they have alot of people , so just ladder method , trying until enemy push until tired , then continue invade. The have million and million of army.
Maybe in future , the 50th century people will laugh at how stupid 21st century people are using nuclear warhead -

I have not watch the movie before, but I can say that by 100B.C., the Roman Empire in Europe has already began to build roads and siege weapons like Onagers and Ballistas. Besieging and capturing barbarian settlements which has only wooden walls is really easy for the Romans at that time.
If the defender has epic stone walls surrounding the city, there are two recommended ways to overcome this obstacle, use either siege towers or sappers.
For siege towers, your troops need to push the tower towards the wall, once it reach the wall. Your troops can climb up the tower and then jump down on defenders defending the walls.
For sappers, you can dig an underground tunnel towards the wall, once the foundations of the wall is weaken, the wall will collapse.
Arrows are ineffective against siege towers and totally useless against underground sappers.

In the past when canons are not yet invented, the soliders wil try to enter the city by 2 ways
1. Many soliders will carry a heavy piece of wood and try to bang open the doors of the wall.
This is a stupid method as the enemy on top of the wall can shoot arrows down at them, throw big stones down and crush them to their death, pour oil down at thema nd throw fire down to burn them alive etc..
By the time they managed to break open the door and go into the city, the majority of the soliders will be dead already.
They sure will lost the war de.
2. The soliders use ladders to climb up the wall.
The enemy soliders can just push the ladders away and let them fall to their death. Even if they manage to climb up to the wall, it will be a few soliders up there fighting against thousands of soliders

Unless you have better ideal of how to do it without using modern inventions .... I do not see you any clever than them.

In the long past before 'heavy' ranged weapons with power enough to crush a wall were invented a seige or storming of a castle had always been bloody and tedious warfare. Ladders, seige towers and ram at the gates were the more common methods of breaking through a castle's primary defences and barrier. I am sure people back then have brains to think. Most probably they will also have shields on mobile patforms to cover the approach. As for the poisoning of food and water, cutting off supply lines, starving the enemy but holding grounds etc can be costly on the invader's side if they were not familiar with the terrain, whether coditions and food stockage and abundance at their opponent's end.
It will always be easy for us (the descendant) to comment but on the battlefield you can be sure with all the blodd spilled and death cries its a very different story from what you see in the movies. -
Maybe they can try out what Qin troops did when they captured Daliang, capital city of Wei...
The Qin troops, knowing Daliang is situated on lowlands, dug a long, deep ditch diverting water from the nearby Yellow River to the city walls. Of course, before they attack, they built a dam holding back a GREAT amount of water, with a GREAT amount of pressure... When time to attack, they simply released the dam and let the water break down the city walls. Then they rushed in to attack...

in china, they mostly meet out in the fields, after that if they still refuse to surrender the city, supplies would be slowly depleted.
besides in the olden times, they are more worried about their lives should they become prisoners, so they would normally surrender. -
