  What I mean is, share with her what kind of financial instruments there are out there. In this way, she will know which are the good apples and which are those that will give her a bad tummyache.

  I told my mom to always bring home a brochure or something if anyone asks her to invest in anything. If it's okay, then I'll make the trip to the bank with her to make sure I've not left out anything.
  
  Cos there was once she put quite a bit of money in this equity fund. I'm not familiar with that, but the value dropped by a few thousand. I low risk appetite mah, so scared leow, tell her dun anyhow anyhow loh. Thankfully the monthly returns can cover the loss...

  I don't know how your mom is like, but sometimes aunties are like.. they don't know anything, so when the salespeople at the bank introduce to them something, they see some benefit and buy into it regardless of whether they need it or not. So it's may not be a matter of wanting to grow her own money so she will have enough to spend..

  Maybe you can write in to the bank and ... well, demand an explanation as to why the financial adviser recommended the product to your mom even though it wasn't suitable for her... and maybe even ask if they can cancel it. Like, kick up a big fuss and complain complain to the head of the department...
