Therefore, will the teacher truly tranfer knowledge in his capacity as an educator or for selfish reasons then?
Something must be done about the way schools are run (like corporations) and teachers' workload must be reduced. School holidays should be as work free as possible and the same goes for weekends.

Much as I hate admin work - unfortunately a lot of the adimn work ensures that the teachers actually get to know their students better, know how much they know, understand their backgrounds - so it is not as easy as just 'dumping' it on some clerks.Originally posted by Daddy!!:(a) there are only 1000 vacancies left for those who think of becoming teachers.
(b) i agree with rock^star that teachers are not spending enuff time teaching. the spirit of teaching should be improved. one way is to have more clerks do the admin work for them.
Maybe the ministers should swap their salaries with the teachers.Originally posted by MyPillowTalks:ok, all go be teacher

Many of my good friends are teachers too... I teach myself, but I am not an MOE teacher.Originally posted by Rock^Star:Yes guys, I'm sure everyone has differing views to this pay rise thing.
I'm no teacher myself but my good friend is. I trust his analytical skills.
It is indeed run like a corporation. Pardon the lack of details here. My friend often comes home moody and is extremely reluctant to talk about work. It has even affected his social interaction with friends. He often laments the lack of space allocated to creativity.....rigid environment etc.
He is quitting in 6 months time.
Perhaps you may want to read this up to get a clearer idea.
As quoted from his blog:
One significant contributing factor, inevitably, is work. By now, you know very well I detest bringing this up. Yet I always do, every now and again. You may remember me telling you this time last year about my heavy workload for this year. I havenÂ’t died, but IÂ’m not far off. No exaggerations, mind you. I wonÂ’t go into details because they depress me no end. If youÂ’re interested, you can go to this link:

So like that just 3 years, can get $4,600 a month??!!!Originally posted by Rigante:SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education has announced that principals and teachers will get a higher pay package starting next year.
Under a new initiative called Grow 2.0, the pay packages for principals and teachers will jump between 12 and 18 per cent.
The new package costs the government S$380 million per year and it will come into effect from April 2008.
Teachers can also expect bigger bonuses which will be based on performance.
Under the new package, a classroom teacher with three years experience can see his or her annual pay package rise from S$52, 000 to S$58,000. And for an outstanding performer, the new package can mean a jump from S$55,000 to S$65,000.
The Ministry of Education said it is targeting to have 30,000 teachers employed by 2010.
Currently it has about 29,000.
Last year the resignation rate for teachers was three per cent, half a percentage point more than the previous year. - CNA/ac
Yah lor, if teaching is a passion, it is the same as ANY profession right?Originally posted by birkin:Teaching cannot be that bad rite..if it is bad as how some of you put it, there won't be thousands who keep applying every year.
Every job has its pros and cons,what..I'm sure even a 9 - 6pm (or even longer, due to OT) job has its own set of problems too.
snort - r u a teacher? no MONEY can make that amount of crap most teachers face feel better about it man!Originally posted by googoomuck:The teachers that left already said that money is not a considering factor for staying or leaving the job. Many of them who left had the passion to teach. Only the mediocre ones, I'm sorry to say, thought about the money and stayed.
It's the job itself. There's no job satisfaction. It sucks. It's frustrating. It's the bureaucracy.
That's the way nincompoops at the top solve problems. Pay more at taxpayers' expense.
I think EVERY job out there has elements of frustration, suckiness and bureaucracy- not only teaching.Originally posted by googoomuck:The teachers that left already said that money is not a considering factor for staying or leaving the job. I'm talking about MOE teachers, you idiot !Originally posted by ShrodingersCat:snort - r u a teacher? no MONEY can make that amount of crap most teachers face feel better about it man!
There are MOE teachers i know who really could not handle the crap at work. But they may leave MOE, but you can't take the passion for teaching out of a person who really have a passion for it. Some of them end up teaching for far less pay at other places, such as special schools.
i am not saying that those who leave have no passion for teaching. They have their own priorities and beliefs about life and quality of life.
but i think it is bloody unfair to say ONLY the mediocre ones stay.
