Knowing is one thing and like you said application is the another. Look around yourself and see how science is used. It is used primarily to feed our desire and insecurity. To put it to more awfully, man's greed and fear.If there is the case, then go and live in the forest and practise buddhism lor..
Science manifest man's characteristics terribly. It is about power. To become stronger and eliminate threats. It is about materialism to satisfy our ego for beauty. Great scientist knows the importance of religion because they understand that science without religion is lame.
There is a reason why Buddhism has been able to stand the test of time... but I'll leave it at here for the moment...

Those violence/wars weren't inspired directly by their religion inspite that many of the Japanese were Buddhists.Originally posted by stupidissmart:there r people who had twisted buddhism and supporting wars. Look at buddhism in japan and how they support Imperial forces in WW2 and tibetan buddhism in civil wars.
However these r more small scale and less involved than downright slaughtering in crusades...
I was an atheist even till adulthood but has gradually changed to see importance in religion. I am more of optimistic person than pessimist. I am also more scientific than religious in many ways because like you I have desire and fear. I have written comments to illustrate to ppl why religion is not pure nonsense.Originally posted by stupidissmart:If there is the case, then go and live in the forest and practise buddhism lor..
without science, mankind may not even be able to survive
That's such an easily refuted statement. If that's the Physicist's theorem, it would just take 1 statement to proof it wrong.Originally posted by Phorum Noob:There was once a Nobel winning Physicist who said "Without religion, we have good people doing good things and bad people doing bad things. But it is only with religion that good people does bad things."...or something to that effect.

From "Conan the Barbarian"Originally posted by apples:I think we can agree that this 2 tools created by man ourselves are very powerful tools. Between the 2, I would say science is more powerful. Since there are "evil" man and "good" man, these tools tend to used in both destructive ways and constructive ways.
With religion, we often see it being used for starting war. With science, we often see it being used in war. However, science is used in another war which we less notice and that is the economic war. That economic war is actually going to lead man to our doom...
Also, if ever world war 3 is started, science is guaranteed to put man back to stoneage!
Simply, because science is the more powerful tool, science is the really the greater devil.
How dare you say it's a flame war? Are you stupid? Did you not get in line when god was handing out brains? It's just a discussion! It cannot be even remotely considered a flame war! I don't think you would recognize a flame war if it squatted over you and crapped in your mouth!Originally posted by seotiblizzard:Wah another one.

That's a good one..which iteration of Conan is that from? Robert E Howard's original series? The cartoon? Or the current comic series written by Kurt Busiek?Originally posted by Phaze:From "Conan the Barbarian"
Thulsa Doom: Ah. It must have been when I was younger. There was a time, boy, when I searched for steel, when steel meant more to me than gold or jewels.
Conan: The riddle... of steel.
Thulsa Doom: Yes! You know what it is, don't you boy? Shall I tell you? It's the least I can do. Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger! Look around you. There, on the rocks; a beautiful girl. Come to me, my child...
Thulsa Doom: [coaxes the girl to jump to her death]
Thulsa Doom: That is strength, boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it? Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart, I gave you this! Such a waste. Contemplate this on the tree of woe. Crucify him!![]()

I would also tend to believe man will just become extinct at some time on earth and probably with science. It is not important to most of the selfish man, because it will not happen in his time. Some others realise it, but then science is too good a tool not to continue to use in the destructive way.If u r the emperor of the world, wat will u do ? Stop all usage of science and we act like monkeys ? I do not know if men will dissappear with science, but there is no men without science.
I don't understand your argument. You seem to agree that science is just a tool. But you seem to think that science, which is nothing more than a way to learn about the world around us, is a terrible thing.Originally posted by apples:I was an atheist even till adulthood but has gradually changed to see importance in religion. Those are indeed inconsistencies in my agrument.Originally posted by Phaze:I don't understand your argument. You seem to agree that science is just a tool. But you seem to think that science, which is nothing more than a way to learn about the world around us, is a terrible thing.
But is the tool responsible or the hand that wields it?
Science, is neither good nor bad. We, as humans, make moral judgments on how it is used just as money is not the root of all evil but we make a moral judgment that it is the love of money that is the root of all evil (this is just an example, I don't necessarily agree with this statement).
