in short, i think mother possibly came from the latin word "mater" (that's where the word maternal came from too), greek word meter.. the TH in mother started from 16th century. -

my summary: think shld be started with baby talk calling fathers as "pa" then the word was pader or pater.. grimm's law (dunno wads that) changes P into F so becomes fader (or OE fæder) then during ME widespread change causes der to become ther.. so u get father..
