TRAGEDY struck the zoo's orang utans a second time in a week, when a young female orang utan died of a dislocated neck in a freak accident on Wednesday.
At mid-day, Atina, aged 2 1/2, caught her neck in a hanging noose, which was part of a hammock in the apes' enclosure.
Her mother Anita and other orang utans, in their haste to free her, tugged at her neck, dislocating it.
She died instantly, said a zoo spokesman.

....it's a bloody orang utan. It's.....just an animal. I don't feel sad for all the chickens, fishes, cows, pigs and goats I've eaten.

You make an interesting comment. Although I don't agree with you, I don't understand how the people who seem to be crying gallons of tears for ah meng and this new orang utan now can be so indifferent to the cows, pigs, goats and chickens that they eat. Aren't they animals as well?
All of you are hypocrites or just showing some crocodile tears. If you are truly sad for this animal then you wouldn't have been happily enjoying eating other animals..
Conclusion? All of you are lairs in one way or the other except for Chewbacca987 =D
its becoz ah meng has been around for a long time. she has brought joy and entertainment to many people. She has brought income to the zoo and boosted tourism in singapore. This is why people feel sad when she leaves. Its the emotional attachment that ah meng shared with them after being an icon of the zoo for so many years.
Just like your pet dog or cat.
as for pigs, cows, chickens, people rear them with the purpose of eating them.
Not all human beings are equal, needless to say for the animals.
i wonder if the zoo will hold a funeral for tis orang utan?

Ah.. good arguement.. But lets take Hitler for example. He had many generals and admirals who lived lavishly and magnificiently. They were powerful and helped Hitler in expanding his empire. Whereas, all the Jews were just "normal human beings" of an "unwanted" race in Hitler's view. So they were "disposed" off.
Like you said, all humans are not equal, but does that mean we just let them be killed?
You do not have an emotional attachment with them doesn't mean they do not have other emotional attachments. They are living things too after all.
Before you assume anything, let me just say that I am no saint either, I eat chicken, seafood and mutton (rarely). And I am just arguing for the sake of a healthy arguement =) Anyone is welcome to reply :)
sad news..
Nobody said it was supposed to be fair, period.
There is no real reason to favour your family members or friends over another person, if your logic was to be extended.
At the end of the day I remember in the old days people had a healthy respect for the animals they killed. It was part and parcel of life... if you wanted a chicken you had to go to your own flock, kill the bird, and skin and gut it.
Now with supermarkets and contracted killing that there's a distance from this killing we tend to think of us being able to divorce ourselves from it when killing is really part of life. I have no qualms about having to kill my food myself if I had to, and then keep some other animals as pets. In my opinion it is not illogical, but as simply a different utility for the animal, and this is a theme you will see repeated in most human soceities since it started.
It is only when we think we can divorce ourselves from killing and dying as part of our nature when we start to find ourselves in this quandary. But I believe Homo sapiens sapiens is a predator, and killing and eating other animals is a part of that nature. On the other hand being a predator does not mean the human cannot form other kinds of relationships with other animals, such as a mutally benifical symbiotic arrangement we know as keeping pets.
What I mean to say is, it is not wrong or cruel to kill some animals for food, and to keep others for pets. The moment you live in a farm and get down to the dirty work of it the whole thing becomes rather clear.
It's when we lose sense of the predator that we are, as well as out-contract our hunting and killing we lose sense of our nature and have the luxury to make such questions. But at the end of the day I doubt the Massai warrior sees any contradiction between killing his goat for food and keeping his dog as a pet.

As you said on your latter post that it is a friendly exchange of points, so please do not take offend on what am saying
I agree that we are hypocrities on feeling sad for the monkey even tho we eat meat. My view is that we are not really hypocrities in the sense that we consume animals for the reason to survive, It is only evil that we do not finish our food, I am sure the animals will understand, it is nature right? ![]()
