i just graduated from a uni...went to a marketing job interview and the boss offered me a marketing position except that the company has NO marketing department before!
the boss wants me to be the sole person handling marketing and i have no experience! is she crazy or what?
should i accept the offer? the idea of working alone with no experience is abit too much..help!!
can you do it?
if so, experience counts for naught...
u majored in wat?
Think of it - no benchmark! You're free to set the standard!
boss see u up! ![]()
i majored in communications. and now the boss wants me to organise events, tie in with the media and what-not.
i have no freaking experience in these things!! i have no confidence esp if i have to work alone! how????
How come you sounded like one of my friend?
Anyway, not to frighten you. He too was placed in-charge of a marketing department where he had to liaise, telemarket and solicit outdoor sales all by himself. He left because he got some dispute with the management.
erm

my boss was from STPB

anyway, many things no need u ownself do one

u oni need to manage
but end of the day, if u think u are not cut out for this or u dun want a mktg position, then continue sending ur resume and look for other opportunities

What are you complaining about?
#1 You get to set up the system
#2 You are given an opportunity to prove yourself which many people would die for
#3 The boss thinks you can handle the job and that you are responsible and capable enough
#4 Experience is over-rated

this is a bery qiang shou job leh
so many ppl want oso no have or no chance
yeah lor..
jus do ur best...learn as u go, b more thick skin
ts, this job need lots of contacts. i suggest u start 2 establish a database of contacts with the media, uni friends who studied this course, your seniors in uni, public relations firms etc. i believe you would have studied several journalism modules in uni such as online journalism, radio/tv journalism, news feature writing, media law, international journalism, newsrm theory & practice, PR writing, PR foundations etc since you major in communications. this will come in handy in planning your marketing proposal for specific target groups and which avenue to execute your marketing plan to yield the best consumer results. did u take marketing as an elective since communications is your major? or is yours a double degree BA (Business/Communications)?
I agreed with FireIce, although its true that most people need a mentor or senior to guide, but once you hold a degree, you're expected to be able to perform. Isn't that the jump that you should get?
*sigh* Yes, as usual, the Tony Robbins mob seem to be out in force.
If you're gung-ho enough, by all means go for it. On the other hand, consider a few things first:
1) This company has never had a marketing department - what do they want to get out of this, and are their expectations realistic?
2) Organising media events will cost the company money - what returns are they looking for from these events? Are they setting performance measures, and if so, do you think you can meet them? What are the consequences if you can't?
Frankly, if they're going to offer a fresh grad the position of setting up a new department, there's one of two possibilities:
1) You've impressed the God-honest fuck outta them
2) They're a chickenshit outfit who couldn't find their arses with both hands
In you position, I'd ask a few questions about what they're looking to get out of this, and based upon the vagueness of their answers, decide for yourself if they think you're that good or if they don't have the slightest idea of what they're doing. Your choice ought to be obvious then.
Personally, in your position I'd go for it, but then again, I's a sucker for punsighment and if I don't know what to do, I know enough people to find out anyway. Have you got the contacts and/or the inclination to do that?
are u one of the comns student from NP and then went overseas and come back? are u a hot babe? if not...i really cant understand why would they offer u sucha position. like the guy before me said
They're a chickenshit outfit who couldn't find their arses with both hands
i really think thats the case here...and that means...u can be another chickenshit outfit and they wouldnt know! ![]()
if im u id take the job because
Imagine, if you really do a good job, your resume will be much more valuable.
Hi There,
It will take you guts and a lot of street-wise to take up this job. However, I would say that you give it a shot and see how far u can push yourself. My gut is that your pay is properly soso to bad but such jobs teach you to be independent and strong.
Depending on the size of the events, it may actually not be so difficult. Not to forget, in this technological age, you aren't really alone. The internet is a great place to seek all kinds of help.
However, if you do progress, talk terms to the boss because small companies especially local ones likes to "eat" freshies.
hey all..thanks for your replies. the company is a pretty popular one, not a small company in which i can afford to fool around with.
the pay is average marketing pay and the way i see it, i'll have to work 2 to 3 times as hard here, as compared to marketing in another company FOR THE SAME KIND OF PAY.
is it even worth it?
by the way, marketing is an incredibly over-rated job, long hours, not much pay. i'm rethinking this position.
they are pretty much in a hurry to set up a marketing department. imagine this: they even told me i didnt have to bring anything for the interview.
