Err... for international chess... it's almost impossible to win with one horse alone, especially when you have 2 rooks.... unless you are really damn lousy...
Even with one more bishop, it's still near impossible with your 2 rooks. Most likely he has one more rook or queen.
It's not because he understand very well; it's because he had thought many more steps ahead of you before making his moves. I heard before that a grandmaster would think and consider 7 steps ahead before making his master stroke. Imagine the permutations!
I could normally play with at most 3 to 5 steps ahead... 7 is damn tough... and requires lots of patience!
But me is mainly Chinese Chess player... long long time ago :(
