I have a qn that keeps bugging me...
How long do you switch on your computer each day?
I heard that it will be good to keep our systems running for no longer than 2 hours for optimal durability of our PC.
But how come I can hear people saying they keep the com running for over 12 hours downloading stuff? Wouldn't the com easily spoiled?
Does the current technology allows us to run our PC for long periods of time without overheating it?
really?
I usually leave my PC on fm fri nite till sun nite, but not downloading anythg.
i on my laptop about 12 to 14 hours a day
i used to leave it on overnight and consecutively a few days but i don't do that now

when u used to leave it overnight, was there a dip in performance the next day u use it?
span of 4-5 hrs before resting for like 1 hr before using again.no probs yet.
i hear from electronic people that its best to keep it on 24/7.
but of course with good cooling systems.
when I need to use then i switch on..
nvr leave it running when i'm not using..
I use to switch on my com 24-7 in the past when im gaming....
except 2 hrs for game update on thurs.
Current technology allows our computers to run 24/7, as long as it is well ventilated.
The 2hrs thing is rubbish lah. The more you startup and shutdown your computer, the more wear and tear the components undergo.
So, am I right to say that if there are good cooling units installed, I can switch on as long as I want?
But hor, a lot of electricity is consumed everytime we switch on com too...

So that means, if we like switch on and off the com many times... more easily spoil ah?
i thought they say that more electricity is used when you switch on/off your com?

That's what i was told, and that's why i left it on over the weekends.

Think SERVERS ok? They are computers too....just not PC. ![]()
It's less likely to fail if you don't turn off and on too many times......just like a server.

like watch 1 movie on tudou then off your com.
rest for some hours, switch on again, and watch another movie for 2 hours and off.
repeat. ![]()
i on my for almost 8-12hrs per day
it shows that a lot of you guys are rich kids whose parents collect ferraris as a hobby.
letting the computer on for days in a row = expensive electricity bills
imagine the $ u can save, as well as how much u can help earth if you consume less electricity.

wot does consuming less have to do with helping the earth? does it really make that much of a difference?
i think the ones who needs to be taking actions are our leaders...if they're not rigorous in trying to promote and impliment green energy, when will we ever start saving our planet?...
you still see supermarkets giving away plastic bags like hot cakes...wot happened to our green earth movement?
I had actually left it on for a week before, only switching it off for 2 hours, that was in the past where I used to hog the computer. Of cause, the computer is noticeably slower, but it doesnt affect me much.

Mypillowtalks's computer is never off for years unless he is going to clean his heat sink,or test parts..
If its overheating issue, mayb mypillowtalks com got the big heatsink therefore it never overheat..but my computer use standert OEM stuffs and i also never off for months, never seems to overheat.(and its not in air-con room).
Current technology?my previous computer last time is during pentium 3 time, also never really off de ah..if computers 7 years ago can do it, i dun see why computers now cannot do it.. :)
Even my laptop i also dun off, jus plug into ac & leave it in room.(longest no off is bout 3weeks bah)

Computers are now so cheap, just keep it on anyway you like and then throw it away if it spoils.
Keeping the computer on 24/7 will not spoil it. I have computers (normal PC) on like 24/7 for years and they are still functioning.

Weekdays about 4-5 hours .. Weekends hmm more than 12hrs .. The main thing is whether your system got good ventilation and cooling system.
It depends on the software you are using, whether it uses memory effectively, whether it returns the memory to the system when not using, etc.... (bad e.g. firefox)
Other than that, from the perspective of silicon technology, the issue isn't that big, although high temperatures may lead to electromigration issues, etc... So cooling systems, as mentioned, are important as well. I think Intel has something built into their chips to auto shut off when the temperature reaches 99 degrees celsius.
