Why it is compulsory to have skilled chinese speaking immigrants who cannot speak a word of english to be working in malls, terminals of airport, food courts, petrol kiosks and places where this multi-racial society much mingles! Increasing the population by merely importing low-skilled immigrants is the best solution that SG gov can think of? Than should they not be able to at least kindly comprehend English- a common language. I am persistently shocked by the attitude i receive from mainland immigrants. Not generalizing, but some terrible encounters include, that they expect me to speak mandarin!
They cant fathom a single word of English! Is this not socially and globally affecting Us. Having travelled significantly, when i say i am from singapore, the reaction i receive is such that, oh yea that's in china (from ppl who are geographically illiterate) and the worst reaction, "Singapore? How come you are not chinese. You were adopted?" yes lol, very funny!
the global advertising and idea the foreigners get when they arrive here is that Singapore is a mini China, cos they attempted to give directions in Mandarin!
On foresight, its not helping the ordinary singaporeans and elderly populations who are losing their jobs to low-skilled migrants. I remember studying about how Singapore has riots and now we all have grown to be a very tolerant and multi-racial society. A local knows the slang and various words used in our daily conversations, i see this as a bond on its own. being able to identify with one another. But migrants will not see this unless they are able to mingle efficiently and effectively!
I am not against them, why cant we tighten rules further such that they can speak and understand English. -
And suppose you are either an Indian or a Malay?

u serious, or u kidding, so while we learn mandarin and welcome foreigners! the migrants continue to speak in mandarin and make the locals feel out of place, or make other foreigners feel left out with no sense of rappport? SINGAPORE is a multicultural society with malay being its national language! not mandarin.
