now now....you know not all PRCs are the same...learn to respect individuality lo...
i've got PRC friends who are nice lo...besides, our roots also came from cheena ma...
Why is this phenomenon so significant in the minds of Singaporeans? I personally believe that the problem lies in the upbringing of this particular group of people. The influx of PRCs itself will not cause such a big hoo-ha, but the influx of a group of lowly, despicable, ill-bred, discourteous and utterly uncivilised Chinese will.
I have definitely no problems with the more educated elites of the Chinese society, but I've got to admit, such is not the case with most of our typical PRC.
here almost everyday we say our pledge about 'regardless of race, language or religion'... and i start to think that maybe the higher ups in singapore should scrap that line because it seems like a lie.
I personally think that immigrants have to learn basic english rather than we,singaporeans, learn their language. hey, my father took the initiative to learn basic mandarin while he was working at china and i don't see any excuse for immigrants to learn basic english since they want to work here so bad...
skali one day, we all kena overrun by immigrant 0.0
no offence to all the other people yeah. peace
tell that to LHL
not us
i think the pee ay pee expect other races to learn and speak Mandarin. didn't you people see the speak mandarin campaign ads on TV? They are using foreigners speaking Mandarin to get more people to speak Mandarin. So the message to non chinese is go learn and speak Mandarin.
Ha ha ha, local non chinese learn Mandarin to communicate with the front line staff from mainland China because many of these people don't speak English.
Is the great oppressor lee trying to turn this country to mini China?

Many western countries people think that singapore is part of China. had received parcel from overseas, addressing : Singapore, China
wait does all of our singapore sports representative like for e.g footballers, swimmers, archers , etc. knows how to speak english?if yes kudos to them
im not targeting anybody heh. ;D
lol Singapore is more Asean that it is China. I'd rather every SIngaporean spoke at least some basic Malay to stay faithful to our national language.
Influx from China is worrying because we're attracting the low-quality ones.
One I know just cannot speak English but he can mingle with the predominantly Chinese population and is a regular church-goer on Sunday. As far as I know he's not a devoted Catholic but joining the church gives him a toehold in Singapore.
He has been accepted at LaSalle to study English for the 1st year at a cost of $9,000. He seems to have the social skills to agitate his Chuch members into raising money to subsidize his school fee lol! Also, it is a Church member who rents him a room at only $200 which is far below market rate.
china is the wrong name fer the country with the population of a billion people.
it should be called middle kingdom from its translated chinese name..."zhong guo".
china werd was coined by europeans cuz middle kingdom sounds long,,,so they instead called it china from time of christopher colombus till today.

Foreign workers who hardly speak the countries language is common to all countries. Here in the netherlands we recently have a lot of polish people. But I never encountered some who cant speak the language (dutch) in shops or restaurants or w/e. But construnction workers and cleaning jobs and w/e are common jobs for foreigners. I dont really care tho, it's all beneficial in the end anyway. They do jobs "we dont want to do", so why should we complain?
if u are talking about everyday jobs like cleaning, etc., it is because no singaporeans (or rather few) want to do those jobs. And it's cheaper hiring them. Can you imgaine hiring the everyday singaporean (maybe the surrent generation)? Prob complain about everything also. haha. If you're talking about jobs in banks, etc., then it's because of sg's small population. With it's small pop, talent is essential. If we just ignore individual problems and look at singapore as a whole, then it's more pragmatic to get talent overseas if they are smarter than you right? After all, they work here (or zhao after a few yrs) and contribute to the economy. It's brutal but true. Sg is moving to a moving towards value creation rather than value added so if there are better talents out there, why not? Im just looking at it at a practical point of view.
However, I find it funny that they just have to work here for like 3-5 yrs? Our gov pay for they university fees, give them monthly allowance some more, and i've yet to meet one china scholar who actually wants to stay in sg to work. All want to zhao when their bond is over. Looks like a waste of our money and space. No offence to them of course, if i were them i'll also would do the same :p
Well that's just part of the reality, don't ask too much for the immigrants
as for your suggestion of tighting up the rules
so that the immigrants are allowed to work in singapore only when they can speak proper english,
it's probably due to the economical factors
As for foreigners' perception of Singapore being a Chinese country,
the fact is that chinese being the majority of the population of Singapore,
of course people will misinterprete our country
if the foreigner don't understand this
that's just simply because of their ignorance
let's just be honest to ourselves,
for instance south africa consist of 80% black african in the population
since it is part of africa, you might question that how come ther is White and Coloured even Asian in South Africa
that's just culture misunderstanding
On the other hand, I have seen many chinese nationales who tried very to remember the english term for the dish
as they uttering the word made me laugh due to their accent
Another way around, since you said singapore is a multiracial country,
can't you be more tolerant for the people from other countries,
They do contribute a lot despite their inability to speak english properly
if not for them, who gonna do the service?:)
Face the reality:
the reason why we all speak english is that most of the western countries are the developed countries and leading the world trends
stop talking about races
back on topic please
The culprit here is not races
but the trend
We have to admit that China is rising,
many people are investing in China,
again, that's a trend
if it's not China has the greatest economical potential
say Arab is rising, the world will still start to incline to the trend
that's just the fact.:)
China is rising not the concern in this topic. Get your points right. I think TS is not opposed to China people working here, what TS is saying is that some China Chinese cannot speak English and expect locals to speak Mandarin to them. By the way, if you do not already know, we have other races other than Chinese here. It is a language barrier that some of these Chinese do not communicate in English, and causing inconvenience to people who don't speak Mandarin.
don;t come here if you perceive this to be so.
crap lah, as if people know where these non speaking English China chinese are working. No sense.
Moreover, if they want to work in an English speaking environment, they need to learn to speak English and not expect all customers to be able to communicate with them in their native language. Spoilt brat, yet there are no brain people defending them. Customer service comes first!
earl, i am referring to you if you perceive it your way, don't come to this thread. Understand??? So don't drag the rest into it.
God damn this place !

Have u even stay oversea for longer then a summer? Wat do u know abt English speaking environment? I lived IN UK for 8yrs. And there are ton of foreigner living and working there that dun speak english.
Customer service come 1st. True, and if u dun like it, then leave. That is how the service industry regulate itself since the 1st day.

Which part of that sentence do I not understand? I am only making reference base on what you u had said. To make it simpler for you to understand. I am merely saying that everyone have a choice. I am oso referring to you that you too can heel your very own advise. ie. you too have a choice in not patronising those PRC run service.
Perhaps, employers of non-english speakers didn't hear your annoyance?
