Recently there seems to be too many employees from PRC who cannot speak English in Singapore. This is a big issue as I cannot fathom why they work in the hospitality industry when they cannot speak English. Even the very basic requirements of the language are beyond them. This trend is very troubling as we are trying to improve our services standards here but have people working as frontline staff who cannot comprehend what the customers wants.
I am writing in to ensure the authourities look seriously into this problem because of what happened to me and my very important client. We were at a cafe in a five star hotel in Singapore. I asked for the bill. The waitress was from PRC - she brought milk for my coffee. My client laughed but he was already late for his flight and was not too impressed. I told her again - I want the bill and even gesticulated the action of writing which everyone waiting tables usually understands. What happens next is a complete shocker - she brings two mugs of beer. I lost it - I went around and looked for someone who was not Chinese to ensure they weren't from PRC and got the bill in two minutes. Don't these workers need to sit for an English competency test or something before being employed or are people from PRC given a waiver on this requirement? I don't see frontline staff from other nations working in this country that cannot speak English, even Bangladeshi general workers on Constrcution sites speak relatively good english. This is really mind boggling!
get bilingual, learn Mandarin!! You may laugh at them, when China come up, they will be laughing at you.

The foreign trash from China are the favoured ones from LKY thus the leniency towards them. I absolutely agree with you that we have no problem communicating with the other foreigners from other countries who work here.
Anyway, these foreign trash from PRC - some have attitude problem like expecting the locals to understand what they speak.
As a chinese I am a little lenient to them to communicate to them in Mandarin, but even then I do get stuff which I don't ask for. May be basically, they do have interpretation problem other than not able to communicate in English.

i come across PRCs who just cannot accept why we communicate in English. They claim that since we are chinese, we should use chinese instead of English.

These are the ones who want to improve. It is an asset if they know English.
Minority speaks good English. I am fortunate to meet one out of the minority who speak fluent English working in 7-Eleven. Her service is good, too.

That is the complaints from other race. They expect other race to bend to them to understand and speak Mandarin.
15 to 20 years from now, people will be complaining in this forum about front line staff not being able to speak pu tong hua. ![]()

Are you a bangalah-lover?
If not, why you cannot speak mandarin to the prc and ask her for the bill?
If not, why you need to support your bangalah workers by comparing them with the prc?
Maybe you're a bangalah worker surfing sg-porn-ums from your hut.....

i work in a polyclinic. part time temperature screener.
bangla come in.. they'll try to play charade w/ me despite some being obviously ill to let me understand their medical needs.
PRC come in.. they expect me to speak to them in chinese.

At least you do your job dilligently despite it being a part-time job.
I would've done the same either as long as I'm getting paid for it.
what is the big deal?
chinese people cannot speak chinese then is tragic.

damn nabeh la to communicate with them (prc)
got one time I went to buy laksa... I told the prc auntie "laksa yi wan, mai hum"... She never even clarify with me she added more hum...
another one is mcdonalds, asked for mayo, give butter, asked for chilli, give tomato, ask for asked for curry, give tartar... so random...
Even worse is when SBS also employs PRC. That time saw this ang moh boarded the bus and asked the driver whether the bus is going to Tampines bus terminal, then the prc fellow talked to him in chinese saying he don't know what he was talking about and even told him "America good good" Think the prc thought the ang moh was greeting him... wtf...
Vehemently denied of course.
But the Sino-fication is Singapore is slowly but surely taking place, through engineered evolution.
Much to the satisfaction of some of those in power.
