A lot of people support the idea of keeping to the left of the escalator so that people in a rush can run for their life on the right side.
I would say that this only makes sense if it is not crowded. Afterall we must practise courtesy right? However if it is crowded, the main intention will be to move the crowd ASAP and not to slow down the crowd in order to make way for a few people who are running to meet their doom or something.
Let me explain my claim. Imagine if everyone stands on both sides (left & right) of the escalator. Assume that the escalator can transport 20 people per min this way. This means that in 1 min, 20 people at the bottom can reach the top.
However, if everyone were to insist on keeping to the left, the transport rate is reduced by half. This means that the escalator can now only transport 10 people per min. Let's say we have 2 buggers running for life on the right side. That means that in 1 min, only 12 people at the bottom can reach the top.
Think about it people. This is simple math. In the morning peak hour, do we want to clog the bottom of the escalator just to let a few "impatient" ones run up or do we want everyone to reach the top ASAP?
So next time, learn how to run for your life on the right side. It will save you time.
New solution: Destroy escalator, build stairs. Make everyone walk.
I'm not sure about you people but the more observant ones would have noticed the following...
A lot of people actually insist on keeping to the left, so much so that they will choke up the escalator entrance and wait for their turn to "stand on the left". Please don't mistake these people for being gracious. They just don't want to be on the right side because they know that once they get squeezed to the right, they will be forced to walk up the escalator.
Think about it...
Well, my take is: if you are in the hurry, chiong on the right. If you are not, then stay to your left. It will just take a few minutes of your time. It's not as if the escalator brings you from basement to 10th floor or stg that takes a lot of time and stuff. Better still, take the stairs if you want.

lovely idea... but please think of you GF that is on the heels please :)
so u mean a person had no right to choose to keep left because he or she doesnt want to walk up?

Erm... Did I say that? I'm just implying that during peak hours, if everyone just stand on both sides of the escalator, not only will it disperse the crowd faster, there will not be a problem of ppl choking up the entrance just to stand on the left.

Oh.....but then u see, there are some people who are really in a hurry who want to chiong up the escalator and doesnt want to take the leisurely ride up the escalator then these people will accuse Singaporeans of being ungracious....

Yeap you're right, but what you have just said only applies if it is not crowded (as i have already mentioned). However, if it is crowded, and all those that are "not in a hurry" chokes up the escalator entrance just because they want to stand on the left, then those who are running for life will not even get to reach the right side of the escalator wad... They still have to wait behind the human jam.
Singaporeans are hard to please. ![]()

Those people who desperately need to chiong so fast can use the stairs.

Just what you you implying here? I'm not sure if you are intellectually challenged or what but if you read my post carefully, I am not complaining about the system. I am just raising an issue, backed up with logical reasoning, so that we can discuss.

Yea...but it boils down to what they are thinking...
Anyway, since it's crowded, then by your logic, they will wait for their turn. I believe those turned off will take the stairs, the lifts or the other escalator.

My logic is NOT that.... My logic is that when it is crowded, everybody stands on both sides of the escalator. In this way, the crowd can be dispersed faster, at almost double the rate as compared to everyone standing on the left only.
How about elderly? They are not the chiong people.

I didnt say that everyone should chiong what... Read my post carefully... On the contrary, I am saying that everyone should STAND STATIONARY MOTIONLESS FROZEN on both sides of the escalators if we want to clear a crowd fast.
umm......u fools are not observant enough.
every morning at MRT stations, people usually stand on the left.
on the right, it's for people who are impatient / in a rush and these are the guys who basically run up the right side.
so, in other words, those who want default speed, on left.
those who want to chiong, go right.
this is better than the scenario of "everyone should STAND STATIONARY MOTIONLESS FROZEN on both sides of the escalators if we want to clear a crowd fast."
in short, we are just lazy to walk...
