every morning at MRT stations, people usually stand on the left.
on the right, it's for people who are impatient / in a rush and these are the guys who basically run up the right side.
so, in other words, those who want default speed, on left.
those who want to chiong, go right.
this is better than the scenario of "everyone should STAND STATIONARY MOTIONLESS FROZEN on both sides of the escalators if we want to clear a crowd fast."
Yes you are absolutely right if it is not crowded. But when it is crowded, those people who want "default speed", which is actually the majority, will "die die" wait for their turn to stand left and in turn choke up the escalator entrance. When this happens, those people who are running for their life will not be able to run.
Originally posted by freakass:A lot of people support the idea of keeping to the left of the escalator so that people in a rush can run for their life on the right side.
I would say that this only makes sense if it is not crowded. Afterall we must practise courtesy right? However if it is crowded, the main intention will be to move the crowd ASAP and not to slow down the crowd in order to make way for a few people who are running to meet their doom or something.
Let me explain my claim. Imagine if everyone stands on both sides (left & right) of the escalator. Assume that the escalator can transport 20 people per min this way. This means that in 1 min, 20 people at the bottom can reach the top.
However, if everyone were to insist on keeping to the left, the transport rate is reduced by half. This means that the escalator can now only transport 10 people per min. Let's say we have 2 buggers running for life on the right side. That means that in 1 min, only 12 people at the bottom can reach the top.
Think about it people. This is simple math. In the morning peak hour, do we want to clog the bottom of the escalator just to let a few "impatient" ones run up or do we want everyone to reach the top ASAP?
if there're 10 buggers running for life on the right side leh?
11 leh?
12 leh?
Actually, TS topic does make sense to some extend. But I won't comment further. This is not an easy topic.

Ok I knew this was coming... Waiting for someone to say this... Be true to yourself. How often do you see a constant stream of ppl running for their life on the right side of the escalators? I take the MRT every morning... Most of the time, only a few ppl will walk up the right side... Majority, if not all will stay on the left.
Personally, I don't see people wailing or yelling loudly when the escalator gets crowded. Maybe they will just say say and by the time they 'complain' finish, it's their turn to go on the escalator already. TS may have a good point and SMRT has done what it is necessary to make the lives of the commuter easier, so if there's any feedback, then tell them. If not, raising this issue here will just be a talking point because vast majority of people here stick to the good old mentality of keeping left that was incalcated right from the beginning.

i think TS will kill and rape if he experience what i did at Tanjong Pagar MRT this morning.

if majority stays on the left then it means they're not in a hurry lo.
peak hour or not, if they're not in a hurry to get to the top, why not clear the right lane for those who wants to get there faster leh?
if u wan the escalator to carry more people then everyone should run up both lanes la.
more people per min leh.
that's wad u wan right, lol
IMO, SG's escalators are too tiny and thin that it's pathetic.
when i see an ocean of people all gathered in one big horde and the escalator is so tiny, i just cringe.
Good idea, and it's actually is quite logical.
Why dont you write a letter to SMRT, and maybe they will implement your suggestion.
Great, now we can define peak hours for escalator use.![]()
People are just f**king idiotic, take the god damned stairs for christ's sake!
Govt spend money to build so many staircases but no one uses them...
WE SHOULD NOT GIVE WAY TO IDIOTIC PEOPLE, TAKE THE STAIRS OR WAIT IN LINE!
this is why i usually take the stairs. because you fuckers like to stand on the left right centre and leave no path for me to walk. this is also why i hate when there are only escalators and no stairs. and when there are only one or 2 persons blocking my path, i will excuse me until they move so that i can walk.
ppl will start taking the stairs when there is a erp gantry at the escalator...

Logically there are no fault in the way you're looking at it.
HOWEVER, that is assuming everyone wants the escalator cleared as fast as possible. Some people are not in a hurry and could afford to take their time while others are in a hurry and needs to run up.
You're looking at it from a mathematical perspective, that it is on average faster for everyone if we take both side of the escalators.
The whole idea of standing on the left is to allow those who are in a hurry to go first, not to clear the crowd as fast as possible.
The fastest way is to run up the empty stairs. Hardly see anyone doing that on the big empty stairway. All choosing to squeeze on the escaltor.
Not the first time this issue is raised...
This is a uniquely S'porean issue, because other parts of the world recognise that having people stand on both sides of the escalator clears the crowd faster.
Simply speaking, it boils down to the kiasu attitude of people who can't bear to miss the train, can't stand walking behind others etc etc.

Hmm....my bad.
Some time ago, such a letter ever appeared on ST before wondering why this only occured here. Looks like its universally recognised.
Anyway, the flow can actually be faster in the whole this way too. Provided the side where people walk up is perpetually full.

No, actually this wasn't an issue because the status quo last time was people just stood on both sides of the escalator.
If someone wanted to chase the train or was in a hurry, then too bad, they just had to wait or try the stairs. This was the norm - if they missed the train, they would not kpkb at all the passengers in front of them.
Somehow, some scholar decided that to "improve" speed and efficiency, they decided to come up with the "stand on the left side unless overtaking " rule.
This rule now forces people to walk up the escalators if they happen to be on the right.
And since the majority wants to stand left, most passengers tend to all shift towards that direction thereby causing a small clog at the base of the escalator.
Speed and efficiency is actually decreased.
Except maybe for the few persons who genuinely needed to move fast. ![]()

Given the quality of journalists on the ST and quite frankly local journalism as a whole, i don't really put much faith when they say only in Singapore.

You know, if all of us did not give way but just take over both sides then someone here would be complaining again on how the government and its scholars encourage a un gracious society.
Hell, i'm willing to put 50 dollars betting on it.
The point is, if you don't like the clog and delay then take the right lane! Not everyone's in a hurry!

Precisely my point.
Not everybody is in a hurry.
Those that are in a hurry, should take the stairs.
As it is, the MRT escalator speed is already faster than normal shopping mall escalator speeds.
But because of this "stand left, walk right" thing, people are forced to not walk on the left and to walk on the right. ![]()
