just asking the denizens of sgforums... which of you or your family does this?
boil a crapload of water, put in containers to cool for drinking?
because i find this very pointless... yet a lot of the people in the office, both young and old do this mindlessly... and insist on boiling water, letting it cool before drinking it..
worse, they think i'm mad for drinking tap water...
a lot of energy is wasted boiling the water just to let it cool again.. why do people do this?
i know in the past, it is necessary because the water wasn't safe, but in Singapore, the water is unreasonably clean and safe.. in fact, it's safe beyond the necessary safety standards
yet people keep boiling the water...
why?
p.s. the energy used to boil the water equates to gas and electricity = greenhouse gases and money and all that...
just in case ma ![]()
my mom used to do it too
until we installed a filter thingy at home
i got news for you.. the filter makes the water less safe if you do not change it regularly ![]()
more regularly than the manual or whatever tells you..
the filter gives surface area for things like algae or mold or fungus to grow on..
and it could be on the "filtered" side of the filter
so think about it ![]()
eh... somethings becomes a habit... We grew up being taught like tat... Hard to change, ah bear...
wah
i dunno the filter how long no change liao
maybe i shud start boiling the filtered water ![]()

why is it hard to change?
just stop boiling it...
think of the amount of money wasted in energy costs...
my household only boil water cos we need coffee in the morning .. Other than that we use the fliter thingy
hmmz, boil to put into vaccum flask and to make tea then let the tea cool
I guess I'm just paranoid. even my chinchilla gets boiled water ![]()

eh... no idea why it's hard to change... honestly, if u pour me a boiled-then-cooled-off-water and tap water, i most likely wont taste the difference...

actually I notice that the water tastes slightly sweet if you mixed tap water and the boiled then cooled water. Don't ask me why.
1. Boiled water is safer. Especially for babies and young children.
Even if the source of supplied water is guaranteed safe by govt. What about the state of tanks, pumps and pipes before it reaches your very tap?
2. Boiled water simply tastes better. Boiling gets rid of that whiff of chlorine and fluoride which turns most people off drinking raw water.
Simples.
i was brought up to drink only boiled water...my mom's paranoia but once i left home, it was 50:50 on drinking boiled water and straight from the tap. oh yeah, also depends on how lazy i am.
Installing filter harmful to us...Boiling and coolingharmful to the environment...what gives ![]()
The processed water from Johor and our reserviours may be super safe and clean, but think of the piping system, laid down eons ago. I would say the pipeworks for new estates and offices would be cleaner, but i do think the older pipeworks may not be 100% clean.
Think also of the water tanks and storage facillities either on buildings. So far periodic tests had been conducted and it is still safe to drink.
I've had to drink mud water in dry desert-like military trainning areas overseas for periods of time and survived, swam in rivers where it is the only drinking source, fell overboard into offal streamed harbours several times, and certainly, Spore tap water is still the safest and cleanest. At least i see no physical dirt or worms in the filled cups.
Still, better be safe than sorry with current high medical costs to pay by us and society, pampered generation that we are.![]()
think about this: the water being piped is basically moving water through the pipes..
what do you do when washing stuff? moving water over it.. ![]()
as for the "state of the pipes and tanks", think about this.. if it's the particles dissolved in the water, what makes you think boiling will remove the particles?
fluoride and chlorine? how about letting it stand there instead of boiling it? the stuff will also go away.. which is what people do for their fish-tank water... just let it stand..
sure as heck saves you a lot of energy, right?

Boil water
Store in vaccum flask (dunno if anyone still using this in this day and age)
Overtime, heat still get lost, pour not hot water into drinking water kettle.
(on side note, not that I dun trust the pipes and tanks, it is the workers that are cleaning them that I dun trust. I ever saw the whole cleaning process, these half naked workers just jump into the tanks and the amount of dirt they dig out of the tanks is like eeeeewwwwww, plus the mixture of the sweat cum smoke ash (these asses smoke when they are cleaning the tank) cum wash leg water cum dirt still left in the tank, no matter how the NEA ppl certified it, I just prefer boiled water after that)
boiling water is to kill bacteria..it's troublesome and uses electricity but it's cleaner...apart from the pipes, you need to be mindful of the tap... raw meat, dirty hands & other filth could have come in contact with the nozzle of the tap you drink from....
I do desalination![]()
to kill any bacteria i think?
bacteria?
the slight chlorination kills almost all of it..
