It is an old practice by Britain......
Nowadays Singapore is an independent sovereign country already.......why still use old Britain colonial practice.....
In the old days, Britain like to transport different troops from different ethnic groups to fight its war in many theaters of wars.....
For example, they recruit Indian troops or whatever, and use them and transport them to fight the war elsewhere.
So this is part and parcel of the British practice.....leftover from its empire days....
Nowdays Singapore is independent, not part of Britain anymore.....why still use this practice and continue with it....
These Gurkhas basically are foreigners.....they are foreign army...........are Gurkhas part of Singapore? Are Nepal and Singapore part of same country, British Empire...?
It is true that it is questionable to keep using Gurkhas. It brings some questions and doubts about the motivations of keeping them.

not during peace time. war maybe some will do it. suicide acts when one is cornered or failure to accomplished a mission sometimes the assailants usually take their own lives or die together with his opponents. if you have left only a grenade and is surrounded. pluck the courage and pull the pin. hope for a quick swift death together with your enemies.
i think before they can pull the rigger you can already sue them for staring intimidation already.
acts of suicide in battle is already a very old way of a soldier sometimes. recalling the more recent battles i believe the USS Enterprise's service ended when a japanese suicide kamikaze bomber pilot made a surprised dive after taking severe hits from the US navy. I will check out the links online or books to double reconfirm this.
Ninjas in ancient japan were famous for biting their own tongue and bleed to death or taking poison when captured to risk tortue and leak of information. Viet Cong during the vietnam war were also in famous for using such tactics in battle or with their unsuspecting women VCs on enemies' key facilities and US personal.
terrorist used suicide tactics, on civilians.
the title also is to strike fear and doubt in people's mind.

I believe they are an asset when it comes to racial disturbances cause they are neither Malay or Chinese or Indian.
The reason for this unit in the first place is to battle the worsening communist threat back then, and to replace the Sikh unit in Singapore which reverted to the Indian Army on Indian independence.

, never saw that coming.
I agree to what has been said. When it comes down to either peace or war, the ones who weren't forced to fight would obviously do better. So you can expect that Gurkhas would take a bullet for their commanders, while Singaporeans, who generally have the "what do I have to gain from dying for him" kind of thinking would probably consider who they are saving first before they do it.
Family? Sure thing.
Friends? Maybe.
Very nice commander? Ok.
Ministers, especially the ones up there? Probably mixed feelings from the community.
If you read that and thought to yourself that you would most definitely give your life in exchange to saving the higher ups, think about this for abit. Have you said that due to patriotism, or is it something else?

I will risk my life to save my family but not those ministers
up to now never heard of gurkha jump in front of any leader to take bullet or whacking.
We have another nation across the causeway who seems jealous of our prosperity, what are we going to do about that?
