my take on this:
if you plan to do business in China. learn chinese.
if you tour around alot in China, learn chinese.
Outside of China, and excluding overseas chinese, no one else in the world speaks chinese.
If you are into technology, cars etc, maybe German would be good for you. Porsche, Audi, Mercedes etc all come from Germany. and it is very good to have an understanding of german if you are ever to work in germany.
i find spanish the most useful language among the 3. Due to colonial legacy, there are many countries in the world which speaks spanish, and these are developing countries with potential economic potential. e.g. Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Peru, and many other south american countries.
but downside is, South America is pretty much an unsafe place for travellers. so you are less likely to frequent those spanish-speaking countries, and therefore less likely to speak spanish.

true, but if TS wants to do business here, i suggest he learns hokkien (gd for taiwan and fujian), teochew, hakka, cantonese (good in guanchou and Hk too) and also hainan (good for Hainan island and also chicken rice talk)
But you guys know...most of the ppl in china think that mandarin chinese will replace english and become global language soon! lol. that's what i read from their forum.
