Study reveals Singaporeans endure one of the poorest quality of life
A report by international Swiss investment bank UBS reveals that Singaporeans have one of the poorest quality of life — a level comparable with Moscow and Johannesburg.
Entitled “Price and Earnings 2009″, the report reveals that while Singaporeans enjoy one of the highest per capital GDP (PPP-adjusted) in Asia at $49,288, the figures belie the quality of life the ordinary Singaporean endures.
Although Singapore has a higher GDP per capita than countries such as Switzerland, it has a depressing wage index of only 31.3, compared to Zurich and Geneva of 119.8 and 107.5 respectively.
The wage index of Singapore is approximately at the same level as that of Moscow (30.9), Tallinn (28.7) and Johannesburg (26.7). In Asia-Pacific, wages in Tokyo (83.0), Sydney (74.1), Hongkong (42.3) and Taipei (35.5) also exceed that of Singapore.
Singaporeans have poor purchasing power
According to the UBS study, Singaporeans also have one of the poorest purchasing power compared to other countries in the world.
The average annual salary is divided by the total price of a selected basket of goods and service to derive a formula signalling the country’s purchasing power.
Again, the average Singaporean’s purchasing power (39.9) falls strongly behind cities such as Zurich (106.9), Sydney (95.9), Taipei (58.9), Hongkong (58.1) and Tokyo (82.2). The country’s average purchasing power is comparable to only areas such as Kuala Lumpur (39.5), Warsaw (34.0) and Bogota (33.7).
The report also reveals that Singaporeans spend longer working hours, with lesser hours of vacation staying in a city that is ranked the second most expensive place to live in after Tokyo.

Got to vote them out!!!
voting them out is like yelling at a tree thats been rooted on a ground for 50 years to move.
salary!ministers salary are increased astronomical by themaselves like a self imposed medal on a dictator.meanwhile every engineer, executive and people vital to big billion dollar industries in spore are at a salary level thats considered as third world standard.
what politicians would usually say is,"if we increased workers salary companies would not invest in singapore!"
meanwhile they increased their own salary to millions of dollars and much more neglecting most of everyone in singapore.
This is not true, our Ministers have the highest wage levels in the world. ![]()
The majority of Singaporeans are either stupid or blind, so let's vote them in again for more good years, more good years for our Ministers. ![]()
Well known thing.....
Everybody knows it...
Statistics such as GDP is very superficial and doesnt tell the whole story....But if the data is further refined, then it's obvious that Singaporeans are actually suffering...
But people who knows the situation, doesnt need any data or statistics......
It is well known that the working hours is very long......property prices is very high.......cost of living is high.....density is high......low birth rate, low sex rate, mental illnesses are the results.....
Unfortunately there is no way Singapore can escape from this situation because it is tied to the fundamental condition that Singapore is a small city-state. It's not like Australia where people can buy decent houses with gardens, and can own cars easily and can do outdoor sports and work shorter working hours and have generous state supported social programs and they can relax because they still can sell coal or nickel.
What to do ?
ouch

ummm,,,,,i have never heard of shorter work hours.those were policies back in 1980s...they dun exist anymore in oz.there are part time jobs.bytr they can own cars easily.....outdoor if u like outdoors.....decent house with some garden....state supported social programs is now becoming usa style where u need to werk for yer dole.yes..they can relax because oz has plenty minerals...coal ..iron,,lithium....gold,,,,,magnesium....etc etc etc.
It time to invest in OZ, commodities is up, no wonder SGX is so keen on getting into Oz wet market. But failed.
That is why maybe the low birth rate need not be fought against.
Singapore is small, and is crowded, and doesnt have natural resources.
Which means property price is high, and most people work in service-related jobs.
Low birth rate is natural because the population in Singapore is way oversubsribed above the capacity. Let it come down to its natural equilibrium.
Maybe after 3-4 generations, people can live a more normal life again.
singapore gov does not want to fight much for yer salary......thus when u go overseas....people holding spore passports are no better than vietnamese or 3rd world country.
A cleaner's salary.
850 SGD ten years ago now also 850 SGD.
But cost of living increases.
Time to implement minimum wage.
Hong Kong just implemented.
i dun think thats possible...no one wants to fight it out on streets outside istana for minimum wage even let alone other issues!!!
u can talk bout minimum wage till 2090 or 3000.....PAP can also ignore u till 2090 or 3000.
makes u see stars doesnt it?
We dont have an Independent Workers Union (Ntuc = Goverment), And the Goverment is more about Growth and Pro-Employer/Companies,
Ontop of it, We dont have any workers Right... Most companies that you work for, From the Low and High positions, Most will only hand out 12 to 14 days Leave per Year.. 18 days and above, Are pretty Rare this days, Unless your in a very high position.
The only way for all this to change, Is for them to be voted out... Is no longer like our Parents time, When jobs were aplenty and Cost of living was much lower then it is now... The same job your Parents use to do in the 1990s, Pays the same Now but now Houses is no longer in their 80 Thousands to 200 000 for a huge 5 Rm and sweets are no longer 3 for 10cents.
Just for the love of God, vote out the PAP in next month's general elections.
Everything single PAP candidate must be voted out.
And the poppycock GRC system that allows useless people to get into parliament must be dismantled and go back to the proper single candidate system.
GRC system is just a con job to cheat Singaporeans.

I felt it is not necessary to have the 44 working hours per week minimum requirement. Why not let the companies set it themselves?
Although I spent 44 hours per week in my company, but the amount of time I spent on work is much lesser, so no OT for me.

Then who takes over the government? WP said they are not ready yet. Even if all opposition come to form a coalition, they are still not ready.

just one interview to howlian recently he already said he will continue with the open arse policy elceted or not as he don;t want to put forward plans and action to regulate fine selection of foreign talents. that means many more years ahead of open arse to any floor traps with tom;s harry dick.
my decision is made. if vote its eitehr hippos, of if hippos really cannot i will void my vote.
u may vote....but someone can change the 100% vote for opposition vote box to one containing 100% vote for PAP box.
is there anyone to ensure the vote boxes are not switched or changed like some magic show?
voting alone is insufficient..u need to ensure security all the way and that the count of votes are unbias and not faked!
