Singapore DOES NOT have third world living standards - KRC
Both articles are terrible. The first one doesn't attribute sources properly and wrongly equates purchasing power with living standards. But the second article misses that point altogether, and uses poor evidence. I studied in the States too and the most accessible lunches are US$5 (with a tumbler of soda) and even less (if you opt for junk), and it's little different on the street. If 400 Americans make as much money as half of the rest, what about the millionaires in Singapore (including those in power)?
Our spending habits are probably different from a Western European family of three but the study should not be doused with a truckload of salt.

Statistics such as GDP is very superficial and doesnt tell the whole story....But if the data is further refined, then it's obvious that Singaporeans are actually suffering...
But people who knows the situation, doesnt need any data or statistics......
It is well known that the working hours is very long......property prices is very high.......cost of living is high.....density is high......low birth rate, low sex rate, mental illnesses are the results.....
Unfortunately there is no way Singapore can escape from this situation because it is tied to the fundamental condition that Singapore is a small city-state. It's not like Australia where people can buy decent houses with gardens, and can own cars easily and can do outdoor sports and work shorter working hours and have generous state supported social programs and they can relax because they still can sell coal or nickel.
What to do ?
I agree property prices go up due to scarcity of land but the major engine of growth for property are due to migrants. Immigrants compete with locals for property and rental thereby hiking up prices. PAP no longer generate popular support among younger and career successful Singaporeans so they look to new migrants for political support and fish votes.
Falling birth rates are the fault of most singaporeans such as icerage who prefer to stay at home and hack forums and not look for jobs which eventually go to migrants.
Stop bringing in poor quality migrants to work in restaurants and shopping centres. The kind of migrants Singapore should bring are researchers, IT programmers, intellectuals and owners of successful start up companies. Migrants should be limited to 20,000 a year not the usual intake of 200k a year.

Sin City was corrupted since day one.
Read this :
Yes this is the sorts of monkey tricks LKY used to deceive Singaporeans. The
famiLEE is very rich. Some even think they r the richest in Singapore. They
have enriched themselves thru monkey tricks and all sorts of loopholes in
the law which they created and only few know about it. Let me give some
e.g.s
LKY's late wife and his brother own and run Lee n Lee which monopolised the
HDB conveyancing business. Most of the rich foreigners used Lee n Lee. When
the late Lee Kim Yew committed clear breaches of the law in the case of
UIC, he was not charged. Lee Kim Yew is a major shareholders of Tat Lee Bank
which was one of the last bank to be given a license to operate in
Singapore. Another of LKY's brother, Freddy Lee was a big time chap gee kee
operator. The police knew about it but do nothing. Tee Tua Bah was the
investigating officer. Tee Tua Bah, to the surprise of many who knew his
gambling habit was eventually promoted to become Commissioner of Police.
There are plenty of other abuse of power. Many who know it are reluctant to
reveal due to LKY penchant to abuse the law to bankrupt them.
Just ask yourself why is LKY so probusiness. Why is he so close to Ng Teng
Fong and Ong Beng Seng ? He is also secretly very close to some of the
wealthiest people in Singapore.
Corrupt Lee Kuan Yew quickly abolished Estate Duty in Singapore just
before his wife was declared dead.
By doing that he escaped paying estate duty on his dead wife's assets
which amounted to billions of dollars.
More importantly, because there was no longer estate duty, the corrupt
Lee Kuan Yew was no longer required to list out the details of the
assets of his dead wife which amounted to billions of dollars they had
accumulated illegally over the decades of despotic rule over
Singapore.
estate tax was abolished in feb 08. mrs lee died oct 10.

This Mrs Lee had been in coma for some time. So it wouldn't be strange that it was part of the reason for the abolishment.
The old guard, many of them bought properties in bukit timah back in the 60s. And they have purposely kept that area prime. What was bought for $50,000 in those days has become millions of dollars today. In fact, the area there is a PAP fiefdom. They ALL have links to the PAP somehow. How do I know? My uncle is the son of an ex cabinet minister.
Times are bad. ![]()
