Have been wondering again and again; Why do I have to go to school?

Most teachers(at least the one I attend) simply regurgitates what is written on the textbook, I could easily read through it by myself. In fact what I despise most are the contemptuous attitudes of some teachers plus the routine miscellaneous stuffs school practice:

Appearance: Hair cannot be too long (not touching ears, eyebrows, and collar), cannot be too short (no skin head), cannot put wax or gel, no spiky hair. My friend told me his primary school actually disallowed center parting! Wth?? The students' handbook (which we are expected to abide) portray a 'role model student' with hair cut identical to males is communist countries, notably the North Korea. For uniform, pants cannot be too tight, cannot be too baggy. Hey! What's wrong with youth looking fashionable? Even teachers wear make-up to school.

Attitude: Constructively challenging teachers (some not all) opinions are seen as rude behaviors while the vice versa are not? Why is that so? Are they always right? According to Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Co, Apple (which creativity is vital) will never emerge in Singapore because of our 'structured' societies.

Flag-raising ceremony: singing multiple times because not loud enuff.

Caning: Actually, I advocate such punishment for SERIOUS offences but apparently that has not been the case. Even the government is caning prisoner for minor offences - overstaying, vandalism and etc. - I will not go on debating what is philosophically and morally right or wrong until I(if ever) become a lawmaker.

I attend tuitions outside. Classes are much more challenging plus tutors are equipped with better (imo) teaching technique/formulas and character (not arrogant). I learn MUCH more there but the hours are a bit too short.

Personally i dislike attending class back when i was in secondary school. I hated the hair checks, disciplinary checks, resinging of national anthem etc. I do not understand the need of these checks, it's not like they are conducting preflight checks on the aircraft or something.

Basically i think i am trained to be good dogs who listens to commands.
I have to follow rules set by my owners(teachers), and i need to have the initiative to cut my hair(like dog should shit where they are supposed to shit). This will make their life as a teacher easier. Imagine going to a workplace where you have many people who cooperate with you.

Teachers can be rude to us because Dog owners are rude to their dogs, albeit the occasional pampering.

In my opinion, i understand that teacher can wear make-up to school due to their age, some of them are easily 20+ 30+ ladies who may have spent their last few years studying hard at NIE and may not have boyfriends,thus some and are trying to use make up to cover their wrinkles, in hope to lure some young male teachers, or even old male teachers who have lots of money in their pockets. Im not saying all, but some may be doing so.

I used to have a teacher who told me she can eat in class because she is a teacher.
So when i grow up, i can be a bad example because im of higher authority.

All in all, they seemed to be selfish, and want to make their life easier. Right?

The reason i believe we are treated this way:

If i am right, teachers are advice not to teach more than a certain quantity of knowledge to their class, as they have to cater to students who are learning slower, we can't blame them for learning slower, we should try our best not to distrupt their learning process.

Also conducting a class of 30+ to 40 students isn't simple. I have no first hand experience as a real teacher, but i do believe teaching a class of 20 people is already quite hard, compared to 40 people. Thinking back of what i did at sec school, i believe i made life for my teachers hard.

Another point is that the school not only want to teach us knowledge, but builds our character, therefore they are using these method to nurture us toward these good values, disciplines, etc. Therefore the strict hairchecks.

Actually im glad you find these discpline, haircheck stupid, it meant that you alraedy know that these must be done,and you know how to follow the rules, meaning you have the good character values in you. However, some people are not that matured yet, and this is good training for them.

My school did give reasons why we need to look neat, it is to show to outsiders and employers, or people that you are good students. Looking neat and presentable is their way of saying you are a good student.

Looking like a good student is better than looking at a bad student.
If you have a good first impression, many other things are acheivable

I still hate school, and yes i believe it is to make their life easier, but that will in turn make our lifes in school easier as well.

I disagree with some of your comments. Actually, schools are destroying character, destroying individualism, making students like homogenous 'products'. Only students with unquestioning obedience are good student? What happen if the rules are morally incorrect? E.g Nazi Regime.

Being fashionable also should not give the impression of bad students. Ah bengs and Ah lians have a different kind of fashion. Are SNSD ah lians looking? Are Super Junior ah bengs? My eldest sister, graduated from prestigious university and dress up like SNSD, has no problem impressing her current employer. She used to whine alot about her sec sch days. From her: ''I only like my sec sch days from 1:30pm to 7.30am,'' the after school hours.

The funny thing is such stricter regime ends after sec sch(at least in sg). Except jc, post secondary eduacation - poly, ite, uni - seems to have much relaxed rules and regulations.

I am quite confident about my academic capabilities. Even without going to school(public school actually), I can do well in my exams and eventually go to good uni + post-uni. Thus, I have been wondering why should I go to sch? Essential or a conventional ritual(bcuz everyone go, I simply follow)?

What you said is true also. Then i believe we are still being treated like dogs. Good dogs are easier to work with.

That is the problem, it seems to them that usually when you portray an image of being afraid to the teachers, you are being a good student.
Teachers don't want students to question them on their actions, be it right or wrong.
Just like parents don't want you to question them on their actions, or boss don't want you to question them.

Yes school is destroying characters, they want us to be of the same kind, like a product from the same factory. That would inturn make us(singaporeans) lose creativity, and other valuable characteristics.

If XXX secondary students are of the same kind(prefably all good), maybe the teachers will get bonuses, or maybe promoted, or increase in their pay.
Therefore they come up with these weird regulations to keep us 'tamed'.

In terms of fashionable, it depends on how you see fashion lor. Some of the ahbeng think they are fashionable. SNSD is also fashionable, it goes down to how you see fashionable.
However, your teachers are all old right?

Then again, looking like a good student will bring another disadvantage, such as finding a girlfriend. It may make you look like a pushover, and girls find no challenge in "turning you into a good guy". But that's another story.

Maybe you can ask your sister for some advice, such as how she dealt with secondary school. Also i believe it's easier for girls to work in a workplace because some man will be impressed after looking at a sexy lady

Poly does have regulations on your hairstyle, but that is if they bothered to enforce the rules(trust me they wont unless people complain). However, in my opinion, one reason poly dont enforce them is because nowadays they are more interested in getting more student intakes, earning from part time course, maximising their utilities and facilities to earn some extra income to keep up with the economy, than to check if students are dying bright colours on their hair.

Yes from how you written your post here, i believe you have no problems learning from the book itself. But just go to school to make some friends, get to know the teachers, etc.

I think the idea behind uniform is that it help standardization.

Wearing uniform is easier for the school and the public to regonize you. [Catch you if you are doing illegal things]

Also it also shows a form of discipline.

I think neat appearance is very important lei, you going school to study, also not going to a party...

School - Factory of Mass Education to produce People with no brain of their own.

What school teaches you is to follow the rest of the people and rule and dun be unique and different.

It is quite rigid and for people who are smart and independent thinking, it is a prison.

Unless your parents are well off, they can send you oversea where you will be exposed into another type of education system.
