When travelling to more developed countries such as Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Europe and etc. Foreigners usually have such perception of Singapore:
1) No chewing gums
2) Extensive use of Capital Punishment
3) Extensive use of Corporal Punishment (scrutinise by media on recent Oliver Fricker and Taiwan's loan shark runner)
Look at the Japanese reaction when being informed of our strict(home corporal punishment) system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npd4bApF6qo
Do you feel embarrassed about it? Don't you feel that the citizens(Taiwan and Switzerland after extensive media report) would think negatively about us? Do you proudly present ur passport in their countries?
I know Sg have good points too: clean and safe city; good business environment(cuz low wages for skilled labour?). But are these enuff to conceal our disgraceful practices?
Do strict laws equal safe city? From this report: http://artmatters.info/?p=2397, out of those countries, none(except Singapore) have controversial tough laws. Fyi, China have SUPER strict laws; death penalty can be implemented for tax fraud and many other minor crimes. Is China a safe country?
Please don't misunderstood; I do like Singapore, but I owaz feel that there are room for improvement, esp on our international image. Hopefully, one fine day, I can flash my passport proudly in front of any foreigner.
nope.. why should i?
you are what you are...
I'm more embarassed about how native people are getting short changed and how non-native Singaporeans are giving us a very bad reputation.
na sg passport is very powerful. It does not matter what laws in singapore is.
I bery proud to present my passport when check in or out
Although i hate it when sg banned the chewing gum!!

although there is some bad apples using sg passport. But % is still low ba.
I feel proud of my passport when I go countries like China, Malaysia.
I feel ashamed when I go countries like Japan, Taiwan or Europe.
They have the impression - they dun explicitly tell you - that we are very conservative(a nicer word) or barbaric(a more condescending word).
I don't have alot of overseas frens, but I do have some; I know them from World of Warcraft(a online game). The truth is that most do not have good impression of us - Singaporean. Similar to us, we do not have good impression of China people either.

So u dun care about what others think of u? It's hard for me to believe
Not only Japanese, many developed nations have a dirty history. Anyway, how many WW2 soilders still alive? Probably only a handful.
People are concerned about the present and the future.

To feel proud of urself, u need to have some prerequisite. If the world is criticising you, u can't possibly feel proud. It does not simply come from urself. Of cuz, you can hypnotise urself, creating a psuedo sense of supremacy.
Take Osama bin Laden as an example, the whole world is condemning his actions. He obviously does not has any inferior complexity. In fact, he probably felt superior - winning a war against the world. Is that true-superiority? Can u be truly proud of him? If I were to be him, I can't possibly truly feel proud.
Making a more realistic comparison: you can't feel proud of ur O level results if ur L1R5 30+. Why? People are going to criticize ur result. I don't mean he has to be embarrassed as a human, but in terms of results, it is not someting to be proud of.
Similarly, I don't feel inferior(i am quite happy wif myself) as a human beings. I juz felt a liitle awkward when ppl ask me what country am I from. I cannot reply with a sense of pride.
I never felt ashmaed as an Singaporen where ever I go and I always explain the rational behind our policies when asked or challenged.
"To feel proud of urself, u need to have some prerequisite."
Looks like you do not have any. It is because you do not look for it in yourself.
You think the Taiwanese, the Japanese and others look down on you because of your Singapore passport. It is what you think. But if you really get a census from the Taiwanese and Japanese and others you would find they approve of Singapore. If someone from the US post something like Singapore sucks, you'll take it as gospel truth. It it you who sucks. You are a tuned to what you are.
To feel proud of yourself, u need to have some prerequisite within yourself. Damn the prerequisite of others. If you don't have it in you, are not your own person, you belong to others, and you feel ashamed because you don't conform to their standards.
Who do you belong to, the Americans, the Australians, the Brazilian, the Canadians, the Dutch, etc if you don't belong to yourself, you will forever feel ashamed of yourself, and its not your passport that does that.
i am proud of being a singaporean
my red passport act like my guardian during my visits to several countries
why embrass? U know our passport is one of the countries that does not require visa to go alot of countries. Go and see india, go everywhere also need visa.
Fyi, still have alot of westerners do not know where is singapore. Some tot we are near to china hahaha. So if they dont know us, where u need to be embrass? And I dont see the reason why u need to feel ashamed when u are in japan taiwan or new zealand. What? They have 16 inch dick? Stop dreaming so much and work on something to improve urself if u know what u r lacking. :)

It's unfair to compare Singapore(developed country) with India(developing country). Give India another 40 yrs before we attempt to compare with them.
It is not about 16 inch dick. As human being, we are in no way inferior. I am assessing Singapore's image in foreigner point of view.
What am I lacking? I dunno.

It's not simply a random individual posting 'Singapore sux' and I take it as a hard truth. I got my conclusion from asking foreigners: ''what you know about Singapore?'' Our famous caning + chewing gum ban are first to come to mind. Of cuz, there are positive things like a safe city, efficient governemnt etc.
Human Rights VS Economy which is more important? For me, human rights first, economy second.
No doubt, they approve Singapore strong economy and efficient government. But are our human rights record respectable? Would u respect a country with strong economy but bad human rights?
Yes, I am a perfectionist, I want to be perfect in everything. I want the world to recognise me(and us) with all positive thoughts and little criticism. I dun think there is anything wrong with that.
I reiterate myself: I NEVER felt inferior as a human beings but I cannot proudly claim that I am from sg.That's all.
Proud of yourself and proud of ur nationality are two different things.
BUT I would fight war for Singapore. Why? Not proud does not mean I don't like Sg.
A Singapore passport is well respected. My experience has been positive and I hope it keeps that way. Asians are not generally respected in Western countries, especially with the massive wave of immigrants from China and India. And mind, the China Chinese had on occasions been quite disgraceful in their behaviour overseas. When people knew that I'm from Singapore, they became friendlier and more helpful. So your perception is more imagined than real.
whether foreigners have good impression or bad impression about Singapore, I also don't give a flying fuck to it.

Likewise, I have nv been ill-treated in any foreign countries either.
No one will throw ur passport at ur face(an example) even if they have bad impression of ur country.
Anyway, I didn't not say they hate Singaporean. Just bad impression but not hate.
put neoprints inside sg passpork ![]()
And to add, people in Western countries do have their share of problems which they recognise. For example, having no capital sentence and prisoners on murder crimes are allowed on parole. There had been incidences when these prisoners killed someone after release from prison. And families of victims are lobbying for stricter parole rules, some even wanted the capital sentence back.
When these foreigners make a negative comment, ask them whether they have been to Singapore. If not, they have no right to judge.
Often, people are despised for their personal behaviour - be gracious when travelling overseas. If you give a good impression, no one would misunderstand. I live in NZ, the country mentioned in your list.

According to this report, we have the highest(surpass middle east countries) death penalty per capita:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3398043.stm
I am not advocating a removal of capital punishment.
But 15g of heroine = MANDATORY death sentence is not acceptable(imo).
You need to meet people abroad more often, because (1) you rarely need to show your passport outside the airport, (2) 99% of the people you meet will clarify those stories with you first when they learn that you're S'porean, and (3) everyone is ashamed of more than more than one thing about his/her country.
Instead of asking others, "What do you know about Singapore," ask, "What would you like to know about Singapore?" Their impressions of a country are formed by their interactions with individuals (like YOU) as much as what they see on TV.
You don't have to be proud or ashamed of what is not within your control, like our history and our laws. It's okay to wish for some of the things other countries enjoy. There are lots of things to be grateful for, however - a wide variety of inexpensive food, how close everything is from your house, and even the warm rain (you try living with freezing rain and gale-force winds elsewhere).
