DPM Teo Chee Hean's mother dies aged 89
Mdm Tan Suang, the mother of Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, died on Sunday morning. She was 89.
Mdm Tan's late husband was Mr Teo Cheng Guan, the former chairman and chief executive officer of OCBC Bank.
The couple raised their four children to "work hard and not to expect things to come (their) way in life," said DPM Teo in a 1996 interview with The New Paper.
Then a secretary, Mdm Tan insisted on teaching shorthand and typing skills to her children: her three daughters Hee Lian, Chai Lian and Swee Lian, and only son DPM Teo.
DPM Teo's former classmate Michael Ang, managing director of broadband distributor Stream Networks, recalled Mdm Tan being "very approachable."
Classmates with DPM Teo for twelve years, Mr Ang used to visit the latter's house to play chess when they were both in secondary school at St Joseph's Institution (SJI).
"Chee Hean was close to his family, and like all mothers then, (Mdm Tan) seemed to be the one holding the house together," said Mr Ang.
"His mum was a wonderful lady and would often strike up a conversation with me."

SINGAPORE - There are many assistance schemes in Singapore's social safety net, but it may be more important to catch people before they fall, Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said at an annual charity event of Darul Arqam (Muslim Converts' Association of Singapore).
He added that Singaporeans have shown a stronger sense of giving in recent years, but one challenge is in identifying the people in need before problems arise.
"That's where, as a community, I'd suggest to sometimes be a bit more 'kaypoh'. When you talk to people, you find out a lot of things ... (and) you realise they're struggling. Then you can step in to help, earlier," said Mr Tan.
About 600 families received cash and supermarket vouchers yesterday for Ramadan.

THE LOVE CONNECTION
SINGAPORE - Mother may know best, but you cannot choose your mother like you do your friends. Is it any wonder, then, that friends tend to share your likes and interests?
And, if you think about it, those are the same values you would want in a life partner.
Introducing gobreaktheice.com, a Facebook app designed to find Mr/Ms Right through friends and common connections via the social network. The theory goes that if you would accept friends' recommendations on dining matters and products, why not let them recommend for you the perfect mate?
Setting up cannot be easier. Just sign in with your Facebook account, recommend your single friends or add your network and let the magic begin.
Of course, since it uses your network, matches and recommendations can only come about when you add your friends. If you choose not to involve your friends (which sort of defeats the purpose), it also searches for suitable mates based on your interests through proximity to your location.
The other draw is that the app uses photos from Facebook, which means a smaller chance of super-touched-up photos or glamour shots. And through the match's timeline, you can be sure what you see is what you will get.
If you are already happily attached and fancy yourself a talented cupid, you can set up an account as someone who just wants to help friends.
According to a study conducted by the makers of the app, 85 per cent of Singaporeans would rather date someone they know through their friends and social network, while 53 per cent trust their friends and families when choosing a dating service. PETER YEO
