SINGAPORE: The Singapore government has set up a Haze Inter-Ministerial Committee (HIMC) to oversee the overall national effort to protect Singaporeans in practical and sustainable ways.
The committee will be chaired by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, with representatives from various ministries including the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
This was announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at a media briefing on Thursday afternoon.
HIMC will focus on protecting public health and safety and working with Indonesia to reduce the haze at source. It will also review guidelines for protecting vulnerable groups and ensure that society and businesses, especially essential services, continue to operate.
The ministerial committee will also issue clear guidelines on the protective measures at each PSI threshold.
From Thursday onwards, the government will hold a daily briefing to update Singaporeans of the haze situation and recommend protective measures for the day ahead.
The government will implement a special scheme to help those who suffer from respiratory problems and conjunctivitis because of the haze to offset their general practitioner's bill.
Young Singaporeans aged 18 and below, elderly Singaporeans aged 65 and above, CHAS card holders, PA and Medical Fee Exemption Card holders can see their general practitioners and pay S$10.
The Ministry of Health will settle the rest of the general practitioner's bill.

It is very bad today. And this is AFTER we had highlighted the problems to the Indonesian authorities.
I am amazed at their reaction. And they call us "childish". I think Singapore should boardcast their ignorance and atrocities to the world.
I love what LSL said about consequences to Spore firms if it was found. I think their directors will be lynched.
